Do'nt be afraid to use a little water, saddle soap is good stuff. When it's dry, black kiwi and a boot brush. That should keep your gear servicable for a long time. Good luck!

Saddle soap is a paste type soap for leather. If you wash without soaking the item with water, you get no noticable shrinkage. I've used it on almost everything made out of leather I own, from car interiors to hiking boots. I've never noticed any type of weakening of leather, although it will soften to the touch. Read the directions to be safe. You'll be surprised how dirty leather gets.
