Hogdon/Winchester Load Data for .40 S&W

    I hesitate to ask this because I feel like I should have figured this out for myself but I'll just suck it up and ask. Why does the Hogdon/Winchester online load data only list data for hollow points? I know it's a business thing and they're trying to push Hornady XTP but I expected some data for 180 gr .40 FMJ.

    I doubt anyone remembers but I posted an intro thread about a month ago. I've been reading and studying for months and my equipment should arrive by the weekend. Reading all your comments, I have been convinced that WSF is a decent powder for a new loader to use with this caliber. I have Speer #14 and Lyman 49th. Lyman only lists JHP data for 180 gr. and Speer doesn't list WSF. I know better than to try to extrapolate from JHP to load FMJ but I've hit this roadblock with .40 and it isn't a problem with 9mm.

    So to take my long-winded post and boil it down, I'm trying to find published load data for 180 gr .40 FMJ using WSF but striking out. Why can't I find it?

    Read the Speer book closer, the data is for JHP, GDHP & TMJ. You are going to be using starting or just above starting data anyway. Load them to 1.125"OAL if your gun will take that & work up in 0.1gr increments. Look at the Lyman manual, pg364, you'll see data for a 190grJHP. You can always use heavier bullet data for lighter bullets, regardless of JHP or FMJ. I think the Lyman manuals 40 data is kind of messed up though as to vel/pressures. I know that my rounds are going way faster than what they show. SO go ahead & use the starting data for the 180grJHP, loaded to the longest OAL your gun/bbl will take & work it up. I think you'll find about 5.6gr is where you want to be.

    Thanks a lot. I didn't realize that it was ok to use data for heavier bullets. Is that because the added weight is in the length? I believe that would translate to lower pressure when the same powder charge is used with the same OAL?

    The problem for me with the Speer manual is that it doesn't include WSF. (I saw that I made a typo which confused you as to my question about Speer. Corrected it. Sorry.)

    I'll follow your advice on the length and the oft repeated advice around here - start low and work up slowly. I'm not into speed or thrill seeking. I just want to be safe. I really appreciate the advice.

    TX, Fred's advise is sound. Regarding using heavier bullet data, if you look at any reloading manual and compare powder charges for a specific type of powder for various bullet weights, you will see that you use less powder as you increase bullet weight. Thus, the rule of thumb (with limited exceptions such as when using H110 powder) that you can use a heavier bullet's charge data for a lighter bullet.

    That being said, in the case of say a 308 Win loading, I would not want to use data for a 200gr bullet to develop loads for a 125 gr bullet. That is too much of a jump, and more relevant, closer data can be found.

    Good point, I should have put the caveat that usually it applies to one bullet wt higher, but in reality, you could use 200gr data for a 125gr bullet as a starting point if there were nothing else available. I have done sim thing developing data for wildcat rounds where that may be all you have is say a 200gr bullet & 250gr bullet.
