I currently have a Mossberg 590A1 18.5" shotgun with GRS, Choate forearm with pic rail for TLR-1, Limbsaver recoil pad, and Vickers sling. I like it a lot the downside is that I can't really shoot pigeons, clay or otherwise with it. I bought it because I wanted to see if the powers that be would let me carry it at work and in the meantime I would use it at home for defense.

Time pased and I bought a centerfire autoloader and the idea of using a shotgun for home defense started taking a backseat. That and the powers that be at the PD pretty much said we would have shotguns over their dead bodies.

So now I find myself having a shotgun that just doesn't serve my needs now. I am thinking of selling it for a Mossberg 930 probably woodstocked with two barrels, one long for fun and one short as backup to my rifle in the house. Am I on the right track or am I off track? Keep in mind this thing would be mostly for fun, mostly for the kind of shooting bead sights rule and I am left handed.

  2. I would either get an 835 barrel for it but you would have to remove the rear GRS or get another shotgun.

If you like it then I wouldn't get rid of it.

I would keep the one you have, and get a dedicated sporting SG.

835 barrels work on 590A1 bases? Hmmmm.

FYI-can't shoot slugs in a smoothbore 835 barrel. They do make rifled 835 barrels though.

    Why not?

  7. I would think you could shoot Brennekes or sabot slugs through it. Correct?

    This would be my suggestion.

Mossberg 500's aren't that expensive, and are usually available used.

The smoothbore barrels are 10 gauge necked down to a 12 gauge size...helps recoil and patterning. No types of slugs can be used in these, as they'd bounce around in the beginning of the barrel. The rifled barrel is a standard 12 gauge meant for slugs only (deer hunting).

I believe they can be used on the 18.5" 590's (unofficially), but not the 20" ones because of the magazine connector being in a different position.

  12. Yes, 835 barrels will work on the 18.5" 590A1 the only thing is that you can only shoot 2 3/4 and 3" shells.

As much as I would like a new gun. This is very interesting. If I can get a bead barrel for a 590A1 and field barrel for a 835 I can switch between the two once I get rid of the rear ghost ring sight. The only hang up is the 590A1 nbarrel because they don't list it on Mossberg's website that I could find.

  15. Mossberg doesn't list alot of things on their website....your best bet is to contact AIMPRO to see if they have a bead sight barrel.
