Thinking about getting a new AK this year. I don't really need to be convinced to get one, just need to be convinced which one to get. I am on the fence.

Here is what I am looking for. Either 7.62x39 or 5.56 caliber (don't want a 5.45 because I don't want to have to start stocking a new caliber). Leaning towards a 7.62x39.

Price range, $500 or so, but could be convinced to go higher. No underfolders.

I am thinking either a Yugo or a Saiga... I would be happy to do the conversion on a Saiga myself.

I could even be convinced to go with an AK pistol.

Looking for opinions, experiences, input, etc...

Point me in the right direction.

Since you already have a huge appreciation for .223/5.56 and probably have a decent stash of AR15 mags, I am going to say a .223 Saiga which you can get for $319 at peach state guns, a magnolia armory AR15 mag adapter for $125, and that leaves you with converion compliance parts at a minimum near $90. This option also leaves plenty of room for a wide variety handloading components if your into handloading ammo.

Only problem is I don't like to shoot handloads in AK's because they mangle the brass.

Do you mean the ding in the side of the case from hitting the receiver cover?

A member of Saiga12forum came up with a way to prevent this by using a piece of rubber taped to his receiver cover when he wanted to keep his brass from dinging. I have thought about getting an extra receiver cover to trim the opening further back on the side and this might completely avoid brass hitting anything while casually shooting at a range, afterwards I can easily remove it and replace the original one.

It's hard to beat a Saiga conversion in terms of bang for the buck

  7. What handguard is that? Where did you get it? Looks sweet.

That is not my rifle. That handguard is the standard factory one that comes with the saiga.

That appears to be a Magpul magazine. Is it 5.56x45? If so, which rifle is it on, and what mods did you have to make to get it to accept the Magpul mags?
    Thanks,

The Yugo or Saiga would be great choices. I don't think it would be a good idea to buy a Yugo that's not an underfolder......... too big,... might as well go with the Saiga if you want a full stock.

My personal vote is for an AMD 65. It's almost as short as an AK pistol. VERY cool weapon..... and very handy as well.

Magnolia State Armory? Isn't this company in some kind of meltdown?

    Why no underfolder?

I have always thought that AKs should be in 7.62x39. With the AK system and iron sights you give up some accuracy, ....do I need to finish this thought?

If you think you will EVER try the AK with a supressor, get a Yugo with gas shutoff.
