I have decided to get a 1911, and have decided on an STI spartan from dawson precision, now im torn between 2 things
Commander or full size? And 9mm or the traditional .45? I am leaning towards 9mm as most of my pistols shoot 9mm, any reason not to go 9mm? And im sure i will want to customize it some so is the 9mm gonna be a problem to find stuff for or is it the same basic platform as the .45? Any and all help/guidance appreciated!! Also this gun will be carried some and probably shot alot just plinking, thanks!

    Some things worth considering are:

    Access to ammo?
    9 is cheaper that .45

    How much do you shoot?

Do you have other 1911's in .45?

What do you really hope to end up with?

That said a 9mm Spartan came to live here and went back to STI for a new barrel after one trip to the range. After a lof of tinking around it is finally a pretty good shooter. I personally WILL NEVER carry it.

I have a SS Springfield NM Loaded in 9mm that is a very nice, fun shooter. I won't carry it either, too big, but it does appear to be very reliable.

If you are really after a .45acp 1911, take a breath and regroup.

If Dawson Precision changed and/or tuned the Spartan maybe you won't have the trouble that I had.

I am of the opinion that everyone needs a Govt size 1911 in 45 ACP. If you already have one and don't reload I would highly consider the commander size in 9mm. I know people are going to say they won't have a 1911 in 9mm in their collection, great, I respect that opinion but I love my 2 1911's in 9mm (I have DW's). They are cheaper to shoot, very accurate and have more manageable recoil. My older daughter, 13, can handle the 9mm much better than the 45 ACP so its nice to be able to take her to the range and have her learn the 1911 platform. Just my 2 cents

What happened with the barrel? And no i dont have a ,45 1911 currently, have owned several, i was just thinking consolidation of mostly only buying 9mm ammo, i just want a good fun shooter, what were all the problems with the 9mm spartan? And also how is the fit and finish on it compared to the springfield

The barrel was very rough on the inside. Then I bought a STI Guardian CCO. The mag release popped out of it when I took it to the range. STI has a great reputation with their higher end guns, but I'm not sold on the entry level offerings.

I don't have the experience to offer solid suggestions for a carry 9mm 1911 at any price point. If I'm carrying 9mm it's a Beretta or a Glock.

90% of the time i cc glocks, just gonna theow it in the mix every once in a while. More of a shooter than anything, just trying to get the best quality and features at my price point and try to decide between 9 and .45 as i dont reload and most of my guns are 9mm

The words "1911" and "9mm" should never be used in the same sentence...

    A 1911 has to be .45.
If it's a real Commander size (full size frame and 4.25 barrel)
    I will stick with Commander.

I own a STI SPARTAN and it's a great choice.

I was originaly going to get my first 1911 in 9mm(an STI)
I ended up getting one in 45,I'm happy I did as I'm now a BIG fan of 45.
I'd stay with a 5 in model also, mine carries as well as my normal carry gun,a G23.

If you want a 1911 buy a full size or at the least a commander in .45 and be happy.

If you want a compact 9mm buy a Glock.

Got the glocks, just want a 1911 and seems like a good idea to buy 9mm since its cheaper to shoot and its mostly what i buy ammo wise
