One more thing, since this started, I've been constantly getting the message; "Google Update has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Try going to safe mode and see if that work.

Boot to Safe Mode, from a command prompt, run "chkdsk /r".

First, it's just a thought, but, you do have everything backed up - Right? :freak:

Second, remember to backup your original registry BEFORE you attempt any of these fixes, too! (You can find out how on-line.)

    1. Now, until you've got everything working properly again, turn off System Restore.

    2. You, ALSO, OWN SPYWARE AND ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE - RIGHT! Good, then, run both scans and check the results.

    3. Go to: 'Tools > Internet Options > General > Home Page'. Reset your browser to either, 'use blank' or 'http://www.google.com'. (For now, 'use blank' might be the best choice.)

    4. Next go to: 'Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Restore Advance Settings'. Reset everything to the initial configuration.

    5. Then go to: 'Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Reset'. This will update and restore Internet 7 to a configuration that should work. If you need additional upgrades you will be advised where to find them.

    6. In any event I think you should open, 'Microsoft Updates' and perform a scan for any recent updates that you might be missing.

    7. If you're forced to work in, 'Safe Mode' chances are that you're already screwed and need more serious remedial diagnostics than Windows is able to normally offer.

Finally if you don't own a registry editor like, 'Registry Defense v4.1' sooner or later your computer is going to start to bog down with all the crap it's bound to pickup both on and off line.

If you, also, don't own a Spyware utility then the same bad things are bound to happen to you. The best Spyware detector on the market is, 'Spyware Detector 2009'. It's light years ahead of the competition!

Everybody's got their own idea of what a good antivirus program is. Personally, I like BitDefender Internet Security 2009; and, I think it's stupid to attempt to rely on freeware (Which is often loaded with its own intrusive spyware!) for anything as important as antiviral protection.

One more precaution: I would, also, dump the, 'prefetch' directory. (Start > Run > Enter, 'prefetch' > Enter > Delete.) Go ahead and delete EVERYTHING!

It's OK, all of the relevant prefetch files are auto-loaded from existing (legitimate) program call-ups whenever you reboot. If you're still having problems PM me; and, I'll tell you how to either disable or delete some of the various, 'Active X' controls which might be contributing to your problem.

NOTE: I'm not a computer expert; but, I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night - OK! ;)
