Here's a compilation of most all of the warmer .40 S&W loads I've worked up in a more condensed version. The data is mostly all there, sometimes an OAL is left out or the type of brass and primer used, but for most of my "heavy" .40 S&W loads I used Federal brass with CCI SP primers.

I'll try and make one post per powder and within that post will have the firearm used and it will be updated as new data comes in. If a specific barrel was used, it will be mentioned, if nothing is listed, it's with stock barrel.

If anybody wants to share their data feel free to post it up as well.

**As always, drop charge weight by roughly 10% if you want to work up some of these loads. These loads are not plug and play in all guns, that's why you must work them up!**

I'm sending off my KKM 6" G24 barrel this week to get the end threaded for use with a compensator :) It doesn't desperately need it, but anything to help is a good thing. I'll post up pics when it's finished.

I don't know about great, but I'm glad I can help out in any way I can :) I'll post more data and update the thread when I get some new stuff.

Got my, or I should say "a" G24 barrel back from KKM, it's now threaded with a 4 port comp on it. I say that because I sent them my used 24 barrel and they sent me back a brand new barrel!

I don't typically see an absolute need for a comp on warm .40 or 10mm loads, but then again it can't hurt either.

Thanks for sharing. You should think about writing a book on loading the 40. I find it interesting how close the 40 can come to alot of the 10mm loads on the market. I did some penetration tests with the Double Tap 200 grain FMJ 40 S&W compared to the 200 grain Blazer TMJ 10mm load and found the penetration to be very similar.

At times adding velocity actually hurts penetration whether it's FJM/hardcast or JHP and in most cases the .40 can push a bullet fast enough to max it out (meaning max penetration and max expansion) so going even faster really isn't beneficial in most cases.

More updates! Today goal was to try some more recipes for 200gr .40 S&W since many somehow think that 200gr bullets aren't ideal for the .40 S&W. We'll see!

Shot over Chrony Beta Master chronograph (leveled on tripod), nice day out temperatures in the low to mid 60's.

    Stock G23 Gen4:

    (1x Blazer, CCI SP's) 200gr Nosler JHP, 6.5gr Power Pistol @ 1.135": 967.4 AVG - 33.23 ES - 17.34 SD

    (1x Fed, CCI SP's)
    200gr Nosler JHP, 6.7gr Power Pistol @ 1.125": 1,000 AVG - 8.36 ES - 6.40 SD

    200gr Nosler JHP, 7.0gr Power Pistol @ 1.125": 1,041 AVG - 1.07 ES - 1.00 SD (!)

    Glock 35 w/KKM 6" comped barrel:

    (1x Blazer, CCI SP's) 200gr Nosler JHP, 6.5gr Power Pistol @ 1.135": 1,045 AVG - 34.86 ES - 17.49 ES

(Next two XTP loads used 1x Federal and CCI SP's)
    200gr XTP, 8.8gr 800x @ 1.150": 1,273 AVG - 32.18 ES - 16.24 SD
    200gr XTP, 8.8gr 800x @ 1.135": 1,294 AVG - 26.23 ES - 13.45 SD
(Please see note at top of page! DO NOT SHOOT THESE IN A STOCK GLOCK BARREL!!)

Didn't test the other two 6.7 and 7.0gr Power Pistol loads from the 6" KKM, but would estimate the velocity to be around 1125-1150 fps with the 7.0gr load.

The G23 loads all shot great and when pushed a bit Power Pistol seems to get more consistent. Brass even from the 7.0gr load looked fine and recoil wasn't bad and these loads confirm what I already knew, which is Power Pistol is a fine choice.

The 200gr XTP loads from the G35 6" were a little more stout than the PP loads but not bad considering the gun is heavier and comped as well, brass looked fine. So nearly 1300 fps avg for a 200gr .40 S&W, can't go wrong there!

I plan on going back and retesting some slightly warmer Power Pistol loads, it's a very good powder as far as consistency and good power.

    .....

Update: Shot a 200gr Nosler JHP over 7.0gr of Power Pistol into some water jugs to mainly test for penetration and if the bullet would hold together.

The core penetrated out the back of the 5th jug and wasn't recovered, the mushroom "ring" was found in the 4th with shards of jacketing in the 2nd. Since water is quite hard on bullets, if this were living tissue I'd expect the bullet to stay together somewhat better and it penetration was on the deep side. I do prefer the 200gr XTP over the 200gr Nosler, but wouldn't hesitate to use either.

Picked up a Ruger Blackhawk 6.5" .41 Magnum the other day, it's been on my want list for a while now. I figured the .41 Magnum was the next logical step up from the .40 S&W!

I had one of them back in the late 70s and early 80s,
another good caliber, I sold it and got a ss Redhawk
in 44mag to keep my older SBH 44 company.

  18. I just got a 4 5/8" blued BH Convertible on a trade for a rifle I wasn't using. Put some Pachmayer's on it and got some Colt Dies. will probably use it for vetting .45 Super loads and may carry it hunting but I think I much prefer my DA .44 Mountain Gun. It's sure purty though!

    I could use a 44 Mountain Gun.

I use to spend a lot of time at Raton, the big NRA range, really
liked that area, was in gun smithing school just over the pass,
that was the best time in my life.:wavey:
