No, and give thanks to God it didn't happen.
West Memphis, Days Inn, at 2 AM in the morning, had driven from Mobile after working a full day, then had to load out equipment and hit the road, as we had a crew in Cape Gerardo who were shut down, until I showed up. I drove as far as I could, when I got crosseyed from lack of sleep knew I had to stop.
The equipment was worth about a quarter million, and had to get it secured in the room before I could go to sleep, which was all that was on my mind, just lay down and fall out. When I first opened the door to the room, was soooo tempted, after all, who would know?
But no, being the company man I was, started schleping all those cases into the room. I couldn't get a parking space in front of the door, was parked under a street light, and the hoodrats took notice.
After about the 5th trip back and forth, had an audience of at least 8 guys, and they just kept moving in, getting closer and closer.
I had one more trip to do, and knew at this point, if I didn't get it in the room, would not be there in the morning, due to the attention I was getting.
I was such an idiot back then, had a Colt MK IV .380 in my suitcase, that I had shot exactly twice, for a total of 12 rounds. I got it out, stuck it Mexican crossdraw in my pants, and headed back out to get the last 2 cases.
Safety on, no round in the chamber.
I got the cases, headed back to the room, and had 4 guys about 2 yards away, following me back and getting closer. As I got to my door, could see two coming down the walkway ahead of me, and two coming down the walkway from the other end, so was boxed in.
Instead of getting my key (and yes, this was back in the day when you had an actual key to a motel room, not a card) I instead drew the Colt and racked a round.
Yes, yes, yes, I know, sounds so cliche, and am embarrassed to admit it, but yes, that is what I did.
It actually had the magical effect cinema would lead us to believe it does.
Everybody peeled off, and headed away. Nobody wants to get shot. Especially cowards and predators.
I got out my key, opened the door, got inside with the last two cases, and then spent the next 30 minutes puking my guts up from the adrenine overload.
Just as I was laying down, there was a serious knock at the door. Bless him, the night desk clerk had been watching everything on the security camera, and had called 911, just knowing I was about to get mugged.
It only took West Memphis PD about 45 minutes to show up.
I denied the whole thing had happened, as I did not have a pistol permit at that time, and thought I would probably end up spending the night in jail if I admitted I had a handgun.
Given the political climate at the time, I was probably right.
Turns out, my actions were justified. Got up the next morning to find all four tires slashed, and every single window broken out. The motel got it all on video, and all 8 were arrested within hours. Usual suspects, fortunately never had to appear in court, as every one of them had either outstanding warrants or were in violation of parole.
