I have a Mossberg 590A1 18.5" ghost ring sigted that I have put a new recoil pad and forend with rail on it. It used to be my primary HD boomstick and thought of getting it approved for work but that didn't make it very far.

Now I find myself wanting to go dove hunting with some of the guys at work plus I have long wanted to get into skeet/trap shooting. The above set up is less than ideal for that so I have come up with two choices.

Plan A) Keep the 590A1 but get a new bead HD barrel for around $90 and pick up a long 835 barrel for a little more. So probably $250ish by the time I am done.

Plan B) Sell the 590A1 as is and use the money towards a 930 combo barrel. I think the local shop will sell it for $600 or so minus the 590A1 sale it should come out to maybe $250 out of pocket.

I really don't want to have both because for my needs I don't really need both. Plus I really don't like letting a gun sit around not being shot. While very nice the 590A1 is just going to sit a lot more than the 930. Also I really feel like being a tight ass when it comes to money these days.

So I ask my fellow boomstick owners what do you think of my two options?

I think you should just get a 500 Big Box special with a bird barrel and keep the 590 as is. But it sounds like you want the 930.

There's no downside to having another quality shotgun and is Does sound like you want one of them there 930's....
  5. You can pick up a used 500 for in the $230-250 range, sometimes less. That sounds like a cheaper option than either of the ones you listed.

I was hedging towards the 930 but I wanted to hear from the crowd to see if I was thinking it through right. Its good to see no one is waving their arms screaming "nnnnnnnooooooooooo!"

I picked up a nearly new 500 early last year for $250. It came with two extra barrels and a scope and base. After selling off some of the extras I'm down to $175 and still have all three barrels. I hope to sell the slug barrel and further reduce my net cost for this shotgun. Shop around. When negotiating consider asking for stuff to be thrown in that you can sell later to reduce your cost.
  9. Around here every fall dicks has the mossberg 500 combo with a rifled slug barrel, scope, bird barrel, combo for about $300. Sell the scope slug barrel to recoup half the cost. Either that or just keep your eyes open I've picked up used 500's as cheap as $87 in online auctions.

Get the 930 if you are interested in skeet, trap and sporting clays-much easier to break true pairs consistently with the auto loader than a pump. If you are only shooting singles in trap the pump is ok.

    Circling the wagons.
If you're going to replace your HD barrel, I would buy the ghost ring one you have now off of you.

Just an update. Put it up for sale. Nice gun, just don't shoot it and the 930 will be shot far more often.
