The day after Christmas my dad was walking to his car outside our restaurant and a guy approaches him rambling something about the adjacent store. As it was told to me, my dad, being a social guy, stops to engage in conversation. Mid sentence the guy reaches around his back and starts tugging as if he was trying to pull something out. Startled my dad steps back and ask the guy what he is doing. The guy keeps tugging and tells my dad he's trying to pull out a knife. My dad tells the guy "if you pull out that knife, I'm going get my gun" (my dad doesn't carry a gun). Then the guy asks "you have a gun"? To which my dad replies, "yes, now give me your knife". The guys pulls the knife out and hands it over to my dad. My dad pops open his trunk throws the knife in there and tells the guy to get lost and the guy leaves!

I'm hearing this and all I could think is WTF! I don't know what to think. Either my dad is a badass, very lucky or both.

I vote "cool under pressure." Luck always helps, but he probably fared better than if he tried to run away.

Dad lucked out. Being that close, it could have been bad. I'd suggest your dad get a gun and ccw permit as well. With the way the country is, better to be safe than sorry.

That's what confuses me because every once in a while I'll buy two guns and give him one but he doesn't want to carry. Maybe now he'll change his mind. I hope!

Your dad can keep it together under stress and think on his feet.

Good for your dad. He had nothing to lose by bluffing, and everything to win. Sometimes you win. Having the balls to pull it off is a credit to him.

Now, talk him into carrying. sometimes the BG doesn't care if you have a gun.

know your surrounding , look BEFORE ENTERING PARKING LOT . my wife used think i was paranoid , but i scan all my surroundings and lights , and dark areas .

if he wont carry a gun get him some pepper spray.
and when leaving any store i wont let anyone walk out behind me . i stop and blade and even circle back .

you need to explain to your dad just how bad that situation would have been if the jackass had called his bluff. he's damned lucky he tangled with an amateur and not a real thug.

afterwards teach your dad the greatest line i've ever heard. "son whatever you pull better be made of chocalate because i promise you you're gonna eat it."

    lol

Anytime no one gets stabbed or shot is a win/win!

Your Dad kept his cool and did very well.

Luck, skill, a good bluff, command presence, perhaps some combination of all. Glad to hear it worked out in his favor.

It was a mistake to have the perp get close enough to hand over a knife. You dad could have been cut up before he could have drawn a gun if he had one.

It would have been better to tell the perp to just drop the knife and walk away.

He's 70. Semi retired businessman. Spent many years pastoring a church. Pretty mellow character as I known him for 40 years but my grandma would tell me he was a troublemaker and hustler in his younger days. I guess that's the street instinct that kicked in for him.

I take him shooting with me and my boys. I've even geared him up to carry but he says he doesn't need to. When they were telling me the story he asked if I was carrying so I think now he is thinking about it.

We had one of our employees get mugged earlier in the year walking home. But that is another story.
