Ok, my son just bought a Glock 23 Gen4/.40

I have shot it enough and so now I want to be a Glock owner.

I own a Colt .45 1911 and I must say I like the heaver gun for that caliber.

Here is what I have been thinking of buying.

    1. G19 9mm since I already have the Colt .45

Now I was thinking about this a little more and I told my son I would buy him a KKM barrel (9mm) for his G23 as a gift.

Upon thinking about this, I just came up with me buying a G?/Gen4 -.45 SINCE I already have a .45, then buying a KKM barrel in the 9mm so I can have both of which I really don't need both calibers since I have a .45 already.

My thinking is I can have more range w/the G23 in barrel swaps than w/the G19.

    Am I right?

    Decisions, decisions.

Also, will the spring for the slide need changing going from the .45 to the 9mm?

    Thanks,
    Jim

    Hope I made since.

P.S. I will shoot the 9mm 65-70% of the time and still carry my 1911/to the range as well.

Get one of each... Get which ever one you think will work best for you and the one you shoot the best... cant go wrong with any of them..

First, as you noted at the beginning the G23 is a .40, not .45 but I suspect this was just a typo. I say get the 23 and a 9mm barrel. Since the RSA is the same you should not need to change this but you might want to consider a 9mm extractor setup. I have a G35 (.40) and use a LWD 9mm barrel for practice but ejection can be a little inconsistent. I just ordered a new extractor & spring loaded bearing setup to see if that helps.

Of course, one of each is good advice too!

G23 45? G21 is the full size 45 . Get the 23 and can get 357sig barrel and 9mm. Or could go with G20 and get 40sw barrel and have 10mm when want to shoot a real caliber.

    Fixed it
Glock 23 is a .40 not a 45 and not you won't need a spring change with a conversion barrel. G19 has NO barrel swaps available for caliber changes.

    I typed too slow

Just to clarify; the Glock 23 is a .40cal, not a .45. You can get the 9mm barrel for it, and simply use 9mm mags (15 round, 17 round, or 33 round). Some will tell you to swap the recoil spring and even the ejector. I personally have 300 rounds of 9mm sown range with no problems.

I say get a Gen4 23 and a 9mm barrel. There you have 2 calibers in one gun.

If you like your 1911 in .45 then you'll probably love a Glock 21 down the road as well...

I'll add that I ran 9mm in the Glock .40cal 22-round magazine just a few hours ago. (Can't legally own the 9mm 31rd mag here in Ohio)

Rollbar, I would go with a 9mm since you already have a 1911. I too have a 1911 and I like it a lot and I just picked up a new generation 3 Glock 19 and it's very accurate and quite compact. It holds more rounds which is a big plus for me and well, you know what they say... "Its a Glock"! From the research I've done people have THOUSANDS and I mean THOUSANDS of rounds through their Glocks without a problem. There have been some issues with the later gen 3 and gen 4 Glocks so do a search here and you'll see what I'm talking about. So far I've only put 100 rounds through my Glock and only 1 shell casing hit me in the forehead. Other than that there have been 0 malfunctions.

This is not true. It is 100% legal to OWN the 33 round mags, but you can't USE them in any Glock. A mag is by definition not a firearm. But a Glock (or any gun) that shoots, or has been specially adapted to shoot (by using a 30 round mag) magically transfroms only a non .22 caliber semi-auto into a fully automatic firearm, but only in the Great state of Ohio, apparently. Stupid, but true!

    ORC 2923.11 Weapons control definitions.

    (E) “Automatic firearm” means any firearm designed or specially adapted to fire a succession of cartridges with a single function of the trigger. “Automatic firearm” also means any semi-automatic firearm designed or specially adapted to fire more than thirty-one cartridges without reloading, other than a firearm chambering only .22 caliber short, long, or long-rifle cartridges.

Love my g23. .40 s&w was breaking me so I added a LWD 9mm barrel, and a Glock 9mm mag. Shoots great. Out of 300 rounds, 3 have hit my face, a couple more went over my right shoulder. Ejection seems to be getting more consistent with use. For Christmas I'm wishing for a .357 sig barrel, so I'll have 3 ammo options.

I really only like 9mm Glocks.

    I do own a G33 that's been great as well. I guess you could say that's a 9mm too. :)

Guys just so you know, there is a lighter RSA for the nines especialy for the two spring setup on the GEN 4s some of the ejection problems were do to a 40 RSA in the G19s as they were to stiff, being designed for the more potant .40 .You will need the 9mm barrel, RSA for a 9mm and new mags also to convert a G23 to 9mm

I look at it as a grey area and don't see the point in owning something I can't use. There have been plenty of debates on it all over the internet and many view it as illegal and there are suppliers that won't ship them to Ohio (but plenty that will).

And I agree, it is such a stupid code.

Sorry, fixed my post, not a Glock guy yet, and thanks for the help.

So what Glock is a .45 (that equals the G23 size), AND, can I use the KKM 9mm barrel in the .45 Glock (get the spring-RSA/mag).

    Thanks again,
    Jim

P.S. While we are at it, what other barrels will fit into the Glock .45 set up so I will know.

Why not just remove the factory +2 extensions on the 31 round G18 magazines, leaving you with legal 31 round magazines?

I no longer bother with .40sw or conversion anything. 9mm and .45acp for me. Life is good.
