I am in the market for another G17 and would like to get one of the new FDE Gen4 guns but have recently located a gen2 in great shape. I already have a gen4 all black 17 so what say you guys, which would you choose if you had the listed options and why? Thanks..

To fully appreciate the glock 17 you need to get a gen 1 and a gen 3, with that gen 2

Personally, I don't like the FDE Glocks. Maybe because I've only ever seen them under flourscent lighting, but the color is just 'meh' to me as opposed to the OD green ones which look sharp.

I'd go for Gen 2 just to round out the collection. Then again, not sure long they will make the FDE ones. I'm no help lol.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone who has a Gen 2 Glock and doesn't like it. I went to a range in Amarillo, TX the other day and one of the range officers was carrying a well worn Gen 2 Glock 17 that he had since 1989. The way he talked about that gun, sounds like he'll never get rid of it. Many even prefer the Gen 2 to the newer ones, one reason being the lack of finger grooves.

well I bought both. I just could not pass up on either one. I will post range reports on both when I get them. It will be interesting to see if the older vs newer one is any different in various areas as I am sure it will be!

+1 for Gen 2. It is what gave Glock, the reputation it enjoys today. Unfortunately, some Gen 3, and 4 guns are destroying it.

alright, I got the gen2 G17 yesterday and headed off to the range with it and my gen4's (both in black) to compare. I am glad I took my armoorers kit as I had to do some parts exchnage on the gen2 17. I started off firing and noticed the trigger pull was stiff so after checking her out realized that it had a "+" connector so out with that and a standard was put in. The front sight was dulled down on top so out with that as well. I also noticed that the rear sight was all the way over to the left in the slide. So a quick push over to center and we are good to go.
With the trigger and sight change the damn thing is still shooting to the left at 20, 50 feet. It shoots great but it has more felt recoil than the gen4's do. Nothing that is intolerable but there is a difference in the recoil in the gen2 & gen4 models, the gen4 being the modest of the tow when recoil is considered. Any ideas how I can fix this sight issue? I put on a rear adjustable from glock and it was almost all the way to the right sside to fix the issue. I am going to bench rest the gun to see what I get next time out. All in all, I love the guns, especially these gen4 G17's... pics to follow...

I have a gen2 G17 I bought in 1989 and will never part with it, but I sure wouldn't choose a gen2 over a gen4 for other that sentimental reasons.
