They also don't know that even after he married well he was broke. He worked very hard to dig himself out of that hole. He took over management of his finances directly. Stopped buying and selling good overseas, developed new domestic markets for his products, cut way back on household spending, along with a host of other measures. Before he led the nation he learned to keep his own finances in order.

He had to borrow money for the trip to Philadelphia for his inauguration.

Most of his wealth was in land. He was usually strapped for cash. He surveyed much of Virginia and kept some good parts of it for himself as payment for his services then married a land rich widow.

His house was always warm in winter, he brewed his own booze, figured out how to have ice in the summer, had a running shower off his bedroom, something was always on in the kitchen, clean clothes, and a fairly sanitary toilet setup. Prime hunting land, lots of firewood, privacy and waterfront property. He lived a relatively comfy life for his time.

    ZING!

It's not so much that Mitt is rich, it's that he can't communicate that it was self-made (for the most part) and that between him and Bain and him, his effective tax rate is 50%. FIFTY PERCENT! They'd be better off PAYING him a salary in lieu of dividends and cap-gains.

Fortunately, I'm not a Mitt fan, so these blunders are helping Newt (I got bettah!) surge.

Mitt did NOT succeed in Mass. NOT! NADA! ZILCH! Why can't republicans across the country understand that??? They listen to this jamoke instead of the Republicans in MA that had to endure it all.

Big difference is that George Washington sacrificed everything for his belief in freedom and the revolution. Do a little more research and you will learn that every one of our founding fathers lost their fortunes as a result of the revolution and their participation in starting our country.

I sincerely doubt that Romney would be willing to sacrifice his wealth for the betterment of our country. I doubt even more that Romney would be willing to risk dying for our country.

And he gave all that up, for a risky scheme, or noble effort, to trudge in missery with his army for years on end.

Can you fathom that? Read something like David McCullough's 1776 (great read, I highly recommend it), and try to put yourself in that situation of what the American Rebels were doing. Imagine GW with all his wealth at the time, and then try to figure out how he could choose to put himself in the middle of the rebellion like that.

Like we older folks learned in grade school, was he truly a great man? Was he crazy?

When I think about it, seriously think about it, it almost brings tears to my eyes. Start asking questions of what freedom is and what America is, and how we got here. Look past popular culture, look at what people like GW did. It boggles this pea sized mind.

"George Washington was richer than Mitt"

... and a much more competent political candidate than any of the ones in today's RCC.
