I've never seen a Glock slide with the front sight removed. Is the front sight mounted on a round hole where it's up to the installer to align it with the slide or is there a depression, etc that keeps the sight straight with no side to side movement?

It depends on the tolerances of the front sight being installed. Some drop n with no movement, while others require a nudge left or right.

It's an oval looking hole....Glock factory sights are usually a tight fit and stay straight but most after market front sights need to be aligned.

Or at least that has been my experience.

Tolerance in the aftermarket sights is there to allow for any needed adjustment, so it is a good thing. And yes, it's up to the installer to make a final alignment. This is easily done by bolting up hand tight and checking visually, as though you were sighting the gun. I use a vice, with jaws padded and open a bit wider than the F/S thickness. Don't tighten the vice, just turn slide over, put F/S in slot and bump it whichever way it needs to go.
