Freakonomics : A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything
by Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner

Prize-winning economist Levitt illustrates that things are often not as they seem on the surface. Among the many topics presented, Levitt argues that the major drop in crime starting in the late 80s- early 90s, was not due to more or better policing, a better economy, gun control, or even concealed carry laws, but was due to Roe v. Wade. It is said that millions of unwanted, predominantly lower socio-economic children are not being born and growing up to be criminals.

Another topic that he brings up is that parents won't allow their child to play at a friend's house because their friend's parent has a gun, but will allow their child to play at a friend's with a swimming pool. The folly is that a child is far more likely to be killed with a swimming pool than with a firearm.

Altogether, an interesting and quick read.
