I went out in in the desert to see what my car would do;Q I only pulled 121mph in 5th gear at about 3500 rpm and 135-136 at about 5800 rpm in 4th gear. I guess I need more horsepower;W and better airflow;e

My old Integra indicated 135 once. You definitely need more power.

It ain't gonna pull very strong in overdrive unless you've got some stiffer gears in the rear end and probably some cam and intake. I had a '92 LX 5.0 with a five speed and 308s in the differential. It was mostly stock other than JBA 1 1/2 inche headers, Flowmaster cat-back exhaust, K&N filter, and bumped up timing (what we did with a ten dollar distributor wrench and timing light when we still had distributors-worked the same as the chips today). In 4th it would wind up to a little over 140. I don't remember what it would do in 5th, probably because when I saw that it wasn't winding very hard in overdrive, I dropped it back down and stomped on it. Though it has more horsepower, 4.6 motor in the 02 probably isn't running any more torque than an old 302 HO. Check what rear gears you have and consider 355s or 373s. That might make a little bit of a difference. Won't help gas milege much, but will put the rpms in a much more usable range in fifth. Headers, exhaust, and a K&N type air filter will help also. Put some good synthetic oil in the crankcase and gear box. Ohh I miss my Mustang...

Thats about right. I had my old 5.0 (Stock long block) up to 140mph in 5th and it was still climbing but barely. At that time it had 3.73 gears. I think it was turning about 4400rpm at that speed but it's hard to remember.

Anything over 120 and handling got real scarry!

Basically, I have magnaflow cat back, C&L plenum, synthetic oil in motor, tranny, diff and P/S system (damn, amsoil is expensive). Next round of mods should be and Xcalibrator2, SCT 90mm maf, Demolet cold air tube.
I am trying to find an 02 and up explorer block so I can rebuild it over the next winter:)

You'd love a set of Motorsport gears! 3.73's would make your car feel 500lbs lighter.

I don't think enlarging your mass air meter will give you any more power. JMHO.

    Mustangs sure are fun!

Ron, yes very true the 90mm maf and cold air will maybe help 3-4 hp but when I blow up this motor and build one to hold upto a KB blower it will help alot more.

I am either thinking of 3.55 or 3.73 (3.27 stock) gears, as I am for all out speed events;f

Staying N/A takes alot of money for little gains:( BUT they are gains never the less:)

walkin' trails is right, I'd skip any more power adders until you get a decent rear end in that thing. Guys that do lapping days with the Mustang seem to really like the 3.73's and they are a good comprimise between speed and driveability on the street.

    Regards,
    Glen

seems like you're going the wrong way with the gears looking for top speed. the last police car i drove would do 155mph on 3.23s. if you're looking for top speed, 3.73s are going to lower that quite a bit over 3.27s. is your car auto or stick? a different torque converter in an auto might help push out a little more on the tranny toward whatever end of the power range you're looking for, but 2.73s would probably get your top speed higher.

True, but.... modular motors can handle rpm where older 5.0 blocks do not like it. When I blow up my 3650 tranny I can go with a T-56 and have double overdrive;f

Couple that with a rear end that makes 5th gear useable, and you'll go faster than 140. :)

WOOHOO, I finaly recieved my Xcal2. I downloaded my tune and BOY what a differance;f I can not wait for a topend run. I had the speed limiter removed and more timing and more injector pulse width added:)

45acp4me...I am not running auto cross so anymore gear will not help, it will actually hurt me. I am for all out speed....200 plus baby;f

I don't know how fast I've gone since the speedo in my `69 Torino GT fastback only went to 120, but, the needle was well past 120 and hitting the 7 o'clock position:cool: . I was turning about 6500 rpms with 3.00 gears, so I figured I was around 150 or so.
Not bad for a car I paid $1500 for and was mostly stock with a 300 hp 351W. The 80's were a great time to be a teenager and into musclecars:cool: .

Here's a pic of my beast after I warmed up the 351W and did some other stuff:
