Flashlight use in the home

    In a CHP training course, our instructor took great pains to urge us to keep a high quality tactical flashlight next to our HD weapon. The purpose would be to positively ID a potential target before firing.

    In a housebreaking, would illuminating an intruder have a similar effect as a verbal challenge? Would it provoke the "turn and fire reflex" described in "In the Gravest Extreme"? What would be your suggestion on dealing with the intruders reaction?

    My compliments on your book, by the way.

    Anything that startles an armed and dangerous offender can cause that "turn and fire" response. That's why it's always best do apply your light, etc. from a distance, and using cover.
