    First a little background...

When I was a teenager (8-10 years ago) I did a bit of duck hunting w/ my dad and uncle and loved it. But then I got busy, and you know how it goes....

So, this fall I decided to get back into duck hunting here in NH and bought a dozen decoys and a call. My first time out I ended up pass shooting some wood ducks, with dismal results, so I went skeet shooting to brush up on my skills a little and get more confidence.

So this morning I get up real early and get all setup about 10 minutes before shooting time. Right at opening time I saw a good number of ducks flying around, but they didn't want to come around my area. Eventually, a group of about 15-20 ducks lands about 75-100 yards downwind of me (and the wind was howling, 25+ mph all morning) and just chill out for a while.

About 30 minutes later they takeoff and land about 200 yards upwind, not responding to my call (and I don't blame them, I suck!). Well, they only stayed there for a few seconds before taking off and coming back toward me. I started calling again, and got them to circle around a few times, and on the 3rd or 4th circle they decided to commit. I picked the one that was a little out in front, took one shot and dropped him. As they were circling, I could tell they were Blacks, so I didn't try for any others (good thing, eh?)

It's not my first duck, but it's the first duck I've called in by myself, and my first black (hey, I got a limit ;) )

Any other duck people around here?

Went duck hunting for the first time this last weekend! We baged some widgeons, a couple of mallards, and three Canada geese right before we went home on Sunday. There were some woodies whistling, but they never flew by us.

    Huge fun!

I do need to work on my calling too.

Waterfowl hunting is by far my favorite. Unfortunately, I live in central AL, and we just don't get that many down here. We get plenty of woodys, but the limit is 2. So, I usually only waterfowl hunt once a year in Arkansas, but it is what I look forward to all year.

Warning: there is no controling the obsession.:)
  4. I love Waterfowling. I hunt at least 40 days a year for Ducks.

I hope that you put the Black in the freezer and take it to the Taxidermist. Down here at the ends of the flyway, Black Ducks are a coveted trophy. I find them to be the wariest of Ducks.

I make a trip every other year or so to Maine for Black Ducks, grouse and woodcock.

    Pretty bird you took. Congrats!

I thought about saving him briefly, but between not really having the money and the amount of pin feathers still remaining, I decided to eat him instead. :) Some of the best meat I've ever had.

I think I happened upon a Black hotspot, as I've seen them around just about every time I've been there.
  6. That my favorite way to enjoy a Duck..........Roasted!!!

I will kill a couple every year at our South Carolina farm...

    Congrats again!
