Email - forwarding vs. collecting

Discussion in 'Tech Talk' started by Drjones, Oct 7, 2010.

  1. Is there any functional difference between setting an email address to forward into another or setting an email address to check/fetch emails from another account?

Say I'm migrating from Yahoo to Gmail - is there any difference whether I set Yahoo to forward into my Gmail or set Gmail to collect/fetch emails from my Yahoo account?

forwarding - will result in yahoo forwarding emails to your gmail account as they arrive.

retrieving - gmail will check your yahoo account for new messages every so often (probably 5, 10 or 15 minutes)

in theory, emails arriving in your yahoo account will show up in your gmail account faster if you forward them, however, depending on how often you check your gmail account this may be moot.

also, i believe forwarding from a yahoo account requires a paid account, i don't know if that's required to have gmail retrieve from the yahoo account as well.
