I'm on a bit of a Mak kick lately. Picked up a Bulgarian milsurp and a Russian IMEZ commercial Mak. 500 rounds through the Bulgie and 150 through the Russian with no problems. I shoot nothing but Brown Bear and these things just digest ammo. The accuracy reputation these guns have is very well founded as well. Some pics:

Both guns with a mix of mags inc. 2 E. German mags:

3 shot group with the Russian I made today at 15 yrs offhand, the Bulgarian will do the same with its fixed sights.

Overall I like the Bulgarian a bit better, I have the thumbshelf grips on her and she just feels a bit "smoother" overall. I love these simple, durable little beaters.

Your carpet is dirty, see Bac for advice on good carpet shots.

Maks are great pistols, and they really are about the most reliable pistols out there. Good shooting.

Some people said that Blazer aluminum case ammo don't mix well with Maks. I've shot four boxes through my commercial Russian without problems.

I need more mags though - only have three (two came with the gun and one that I picked up at a gun shop).

I also checked out a Bulgie as well, but the bottom of the trigger guard was so sharp that I was afraid it'd shred my fingers to ribbon, so I passed on it.

I've been a Makarov fan since the East German ones were first imported.
I would have 26-27 now if I hadn't let people talk me out of them over the years.:)

I've gotten a couple more since I took this picture.

Awesome pic, I recall seeing it a few times here on GT. They all look to be in fantastic shape too.

If they came in 9x19 I wouldnt be able to resist. Hard for me to justify a new caliber.

Yes, all of them are NIB, like new, or in excellent condition, except this one.
It's not beat up but shows a LOT of use. I'm guessing it was something like a range gun. Much of the finish is worn off and I had to replace the hammer and sear. Even at that it's a very good shooter and 100% reliable.

    52 yards. Standing, two hands.

Nice shooting. I love seeing old guns hammer out rounds with the best of 'em. That said, I'd love to find a few Maks in like-new shape, they're increasingly few and far between.

This was a NIB Bulgarian Mak that I tried to make malfunction in 1,000 rounds.
I had two malfunctions. A bad primer and on the first trigger pull mud blocked the hammer from hitting the firing pin. The gun fired on the immediate second (DA) trigger pull.

The idea was to see if the gun would malfunction during "normal use".
For instance, you pull your Mak to return fire, but you drop it in the mud. You only have time to shake the gun once and return fire.

Everyone makes a thing about pocket lint. I filled the inside of the gun with "pocket lint".

You use the Mak as a 24/7 car gun in the winter. I heavy greased the gun and left it in the freezer.
Only problem was it was cold to hold while shooting.:)

After finishing a number of different tests I checked the accuracy. The gun was still a lot more accurate than I can shoot it.

The commies pistols are a lot more accurate than people think. Ergonomics may suck, trigger pulls may be super heavy, but they are well made.

I need to sit down and do some bullseye accuracy shooting with my Russian Mak, but my Chinese 9mm Tok will give my HK P7 PSP a run in the mechanical accuracy department.

    Warning:

Buying Maks is addictive..... (I have 3....)

Can lead to collecting every one in sight ...

The trigger pull on my Bulgarian Mak isn't bad at all. Not fantastic, but more than good enough for accurate shooting.

This is true. I don't think I know anyone that has just one Makarov.

A few years ago a good friend wasn't interested in Makarovs.
One day while over my house I got a nice NIB Bulgarian Mak out of the safe and said, "Here, everyone should have at least one Mak".

A couple gun shows later he bought his second Mak.:)

Some years back a friend and his wife were going for their Texas concealed carry license.
I loaned and taught the lady how to shoot one of my Makarovs. She beat everyone else shooting for qualification, except her husband, who was also shooting my Makarov.

On the way to celebrate my friend called me to tell me how they did. He said his wife REALLY LIKED that gun.

When I hung up the phone I told my Wife, "I've lost another Makarov".

I sold the gun to the lady, who told her husband, "Keep your hands off MY MAKAROV. Go find your own".
