We have DSL 1.5/256K. Is 3G faster, slower, or about the same speed.
We can get 3G for a little bit less that we are now paying for DSL.
My wife can work from home and speed is more of an issue than being wireless.
    Thanks for he help

It depends on who's 3g network your going to use, their coverage in your area, their 3g availability on the tower servicing your home, the saturation of the backhaul from the tower to their data network, and the signal quality (not strength) at where ever the 3g modem would be located in your home.

so, there's a lot of variables, we can start to narrow them down if you settle on a 3g service provider first, then we can look at their 3g data network and make some loose speculations as to how it might perform for you.

i would check the providers in your area to see if they offer a 30 day money back deal if it doesn't work out. that way you could test it and if it sucks, cancel before being stuck with a contract and ETF's for service that doesn't fit your requirements.
