So, last night I watched the recent movie "Dredd," basically for lack of anything else on-hand. I was expecting another installment in the superhero/comics remake plague that has afflicted Hollywood, but what I got was the best sci-fi movie I'd seen in a while. It's easily on par with recent films I consider 'pretty good' - Star Trek 2009, District 9, The Hunger Games. Depending on what you like, maybe it's even better than those. (And btw Prometheus? Wish I hadn't bothered -- major disappointment. Looper? meh.) So anyway, for the hesitant, here's my very brief pitch for "Dredd": 1. It's not a remake. 2. It's ******** awesome. So, there you go. Unfortunately this movie lost money in the theaters, probably because most people assumed the same as me, that this was just a remake of the 1995 Stallone film. That sucks, cuz it makes a sequel less likely now. Hopefully they make it back up on BR / DVD sales and we get another movie. One caveat - Dredd is extremely violent and gory. It might be based on a comic book, but it's not for kids. .
