The Chairman of the JCS was testifying today about what could happen with the additional cuts that would come with the proposed automatic cuts due after 1/1/2013.

Blowing smoke or a real possibility?

Also, I saw where Romney was pushing for a general 5% reduction--from all agencies--in their spending.

It struck me that in business, when budget cuts are required, the CEO immediately notifies the appropriate division/department heads of a % cut in their spending for the coming year and it's up to them to get it done. I don't recall anyone every trying to do this in the federal government, which probably led to the non-ending expansion of government spending.

Yea, it's a good thing we dump $600+B into the DOD budget now. That much has got to keep us out of wars. What a bunch of herp derp.

It's the same line the Joint Chiefs give every time they have to account for their atrocious budget. IMO, their budget should be halved.

We pay 227,000,000,000 a year in interest on our debt of 15,700,000,000,000. The cuts we need to make are unimaginable and the taxes increases required are unacceptable. The truth is we will either need to default on our debt or print so much money creating hyperinflation. Either of those two near certainties will drive our economy off a cliff.

If you sit back and think we need to cut the budget or increase revenue by nearly 1.5-2.0trillion a year from our 2012 budget to pay our debt off in 50 years.

There are plenty of other places to cut spending before we even get around to the military.

We have a debt-based currency system, it was never designed to be paid off. Embrace it.

As Ronald Reagan once said "No nation has ever been attacked because its military was too strong."

Like it or not, history supports the notion of peace through superior firepower.

Well damn, I guess 9/11 didn't happen and there are no wars going on.

No kidding. The Statists would be pissed. They'd have to get jobs in the real world.

Look to your local schools to see how the weak are preyed upon.

    Only difference is scale.

We could cut the defense budget in half and it would still be by far the largest one in the world.

Reagon was refering to conventional military attacts and not acts of terrorism.

But we will never do that because of the imminent threat facing America, that threat being 'the loss of money by the politicians who give out the pie and the pigs who gorge themselves".

Blowing smoke big time... most of the wars / conflicts we end up in are started by really bad foreign policy by our government in the first place... so maybe if they stop messing in other nations affairs and trying to force THEIR agenda maybe they will back off trying to screw with us.

Naw... that makes way to much sense to actually happen as most of the idiots running the show have small peckers and something to prove.

Silly scare tactics plain and simple. Our large military budget didn't keep us out of war, or prevent us from being attacked by an underestimated enemy. We need to have the right sized military with the necessary capabilities.

Asking the General Officers to cut budget is like asking the top cops in the war on drug to cut the budget.

Of course they're going to say that their forces are needed and so & so level!!!

I think that the US military budget should come from the countries that we're using them on. America used to make money in and after war.

Done, we have now cut ~1% of budget and that's assuming we stopped ALL of it. Awesome, we have now balanced the budget.. or not.

Dempsey is worried about having budget to funnel to defense contractors so he can get cushy "consulting" job with them after he retires.
