I found a great condition s/s Colt slide on Essex frame for sale locally. Has faux pearl grips and I cannot see any flaws from photos. He's asking $600 for it and I was wondering if that was a good deal or not. I'm looking for an entry level 1911 for $600. Will only use it range. Thanks and happy new year.

I have attached a photo as well.

Too much IMO. You could get a new SA with a full warranty for that price and not have a parts gun that has who knows what done to it.

I agree 100%. The thing is, I want something different than a GI by SA since all my friends have them as well. I'd Iike something American made and stainless finish so I was just wondering if this was a good choice. Thanks.

Of course, finding one is the problem.

    Good question, I will ask.

Can anyone explain why someone would remove a Colt slide from the frame and install it on an Essex frame? Is it like putting a 4 cylinder in a Vette?

If it is nickel,......I would avoid it like the plague!

as for value 300 if it shoots it's a budget built parts gun . looks like an old colt slide (not rare or expensive) and alot of cheap parts on a cheap cast frame.. If you know 1911's it might be a fun project, I would steer clear.

Really? I thought nickel finishes were highly sought after. Why is it bad on the Colt?

It can be damaged bt some cleaners, I believe it is Hoppes #9.
It can also trap corrosion under the finish, creating a bubble of sorts.
It is also a rather costly to de-plate the finish if you wish to refinish.

It can not just be blasted, polished or recoated.

I see. I hope my nickel model 19 revolver doesn't do that lol.

The seller lowered the price to $500, I think I'm going to buy it. It will make a good project gun and I can slowly upgrade the internals myself (if needed).

With the possible finish issues, poor pictures, unknown fitting, I would
pass on it. If it were local and could be inspected & shot prior I would
consider making an offer. But with the info you provided, and this being
your first 1911,..........I'd say it's a poor decision!

Understood. I'm meeting up with him at a LGS and may even fire it.

I will offer him $400 cash and see what he says (assuming I like what I see)

    Thanks all.

One of my local gun shops specializes in collector weapons. The owners particular specialty is 1911s. He had a beautifully blued Essex that he sold for $500; it is, after all, a parts gun.

I will also add that I'm also looking at a SA Loaded Combat. Seller wants 850 (yikes) but its purty.

No way I'd buy an Essex framed gun, they aren't known for quality and consistency.

Thanks GV, I also came across that thread when doing my research; it didn't sway my decision much but had good information. They can be hit or miss, I realize that. That's why I intended to meet him at the range today so I could fire some rounds through it. As fate would have it, he never showed up. Back to the search! Thanks all.
