What can be more fun than some good old fashioned Cowboy wheelgun shooting? I sure had a good time with the Ruger New Vaquero:

My Wife has one just like yours with a shorter barrel. It was her Christmas present last year. She's into the cowboy guns. She has a Uberti in .45 Colt, Ruger Blackhawk in .357, Ruger single six and bearcat. I have a Blackhawk convertable. We just had them out to the range this past weekend. They are pretty guns.

I still like my Blackhawk better. Better sights, I can shoot .45 Colt or .45 ACP and it can handle reloads that match or exceed the .44 magnum. I killed a deer with this gun a couple years ago with a 300 grain bullet over some H110.

    Cool video BTW.

I've had a few blackhawks in the past (one was .30 Carbine) but I am really hankering for a birdshead Vaquero, in .45ACP, with the short barrel (Talo special).

My gun club does cowboy action shooting - I need to go check it out some day.

If I told you how many single action revolvers I have, you'd roll your eyes and walk away. :cowboy:

    Yep, Rattlesnake has a 9.68 second 10/10/2 stage, and a 10.51 second 10/10/4 stage, and I think he's only 13.

What is the difference between the old Vaquero, and the new Vaquero?

    (That kid is awesome!)

New Vaquero has a slightly smaller frame, and is only available in .357 and .45 Colt and only 4 5/8" and 5 1/2" barrel lengths. The 7 1/2" has been discontinued.

Why did Ruger make it? I'm not familiar with these kinds of guns. What were they trying to get at that the old Vaquero didn't do?

Video looks like it doesn't have to be on half cock to load. Is that true? Different than a Colt SAA?

Amsdorf, you have really good videos.

I can only think of small things to critique. Background shots are distracting, don't know if you can get more isolation for your range use. Shoot and see target was already shot up when you put camera on it. Spend more of your money for fresh targets to entertain me :)

You also have very good interests. I'm impressed with your videos on WWII training stuff, Beretta 92, and now a cowboy gun. I'm not a big youtube surfer, but makes me want search to see what other videos you made.

"New Model" Rugers do not have to be on half cock to load. The older "3 screw models" did. Now here is where it gets confusing... the original Blackhawks were called Blackhawks. The later models with the transfer bars are called "New Model Blackhawks". When the Vaquero came along, it was just called the Vaquero, NOT "New Model Vaquero". THEN Ruger downsized it a little to be more in line size wise with the Colt frame. This model is called the "New Vaquero". Purists say there is no such thing as an "Old Vaquero", which is true... sort of. The original model Vaqueros were available in several calibers; .32-20/.32 H&R mag convertible, .357 mag, .357/9mm convertible, .44 Special, .44 mag, .38-40/.40 S&W convertible, .44-40, and .45 Colt... did I miss any?

    Thanks for the explanation, Jbar......

I have the old Vaquero, and that's the only single action revolver I own......not really up to speed on all the variations. Can I assume my Vaquero would actually be a little better than the new Vaquero, if the intent is to reload more powerful cartridges? Mine is in 45colt, and I've been reloading some pretty stout 300grain cast loads for it.......specifically intended as a woods gun.

    Thanks, glad you like 'em.

Re. distracting shots in background....I try to tell the other people at the gun club to stop shooting so I can get clean audio...they just don't listen to me, or, probably don't hear me since they are shooting.
