Have I mentioned that I dislike them lately?

Last night got a chance to get out to the track. #^%*@!! Corvettes.

It seemed for the money Corvettes and WRXs were about the fastest 1/4 mile cars. Sure there were cars that were faster. There were pure race cars. There were some Gt-Rs. There was a ZR1. A fairly new viper.

But bang for the buck seemed to be going for C5 and especially C6 vettes with blowers on them and WRXs (of course modified).

They're sexy cars. Corvettes have always been a great buy - people complain about, "Ohhh the interior is so plasticky" but where else can you get that much performance for that little (comparatively) money?
WRXs are quick little cars too, but I always wondered how hard launches would fair on their AWD systems.

What about the 2011+ Mustang GTs? I have one and they're really fast. I have an auto. The manual transmission mustants are a nightmare right now.

I live at high altitude so that affects cars speeds a lot.

The 5.0s (coyote) are running decently but I haven't seen one with a blower run yet. That will get their performance up near the blown C5/C6 (in a quarter mile). There just arent many that have been modified yet.

From what I have seen, they abuse them pretty hard and they hold together, but that said, watching them and knowing the amount of maintenance/rebuilds that go into them are two different things. The dyno shop I use is a Subi tuner. I have seen 600whp WRXs in there.

the only problem with subaru's is the 2.0 wrx and 2.5L sti blocks are usually only good to about 400whp. Whereas the evo's 2.0L mitsu motors I've personally seen hit 600whp on the stock internals.

Something else I find funny is that "Top Gear" doesn't like the Corvette, in part, because you can't get it in right hand drive. I wish someone would explain to them that England isn't enough of a market to justify a special version of the Corvette, which is a low-volume car (by GM's standards) to start with.

The vette is the best value in performance cars today IMO, although the Nissan GTR looks like a good one as well.

Launch a WRX and you're eventually going to shred first gear. But who cares? I picked up a spare tranny for $50 and it cost me another $300 to have 5th replaced. It had <5k on it.

If guys are dragging their cars regularly you can bet they either have a STi 6 speed or aftermarket gears. Then the next point of failure is typically the CV's and axles.

FWIW WRX's are pretty poor drag cars, not what they're designed for, but MAD fun on a road course. They're not the fastest car out there, but they're one of the easiest cars to drive fast.

And cheap. I've seen 3 up for sale recently, nicely modded, not riced, in the $6-$8k range. That's toy money. If I had the garage space I'd buy another one just for Rally-x.

I caught an episode of "Battle of the Supercars". It's a 30 minute show where they take two fast cars and pit them against each other in several tests.

Episode 4 compared the Corvette ZR1 against the Viper SRT 10.

The Vette won 3 out of 5 categories.
Would have been the other way around, but the Viper lost the 1 mile race, standing start. Had a big lead on the Vette, but at 170MPH, he put it in 5th(?) and it was topped out. I think maybe went to 175MPH. The Vette was able to go to 184 and passed right at the end.

Good series, I have it on my DVR to record all the time now. Looking at their website, they're comparing cars I never even heard of:
    http://www.speedtv.com/programs/battle-of-the-supercars/matchups/
(course, I don't really keep up with the $100,000 and up models as they're not in my league).

Before the show, I think I would have wanted the Viper. After watching it... that Vette is a bad mo fo for sure.

There is a bone stock C6Z06 on street tires that Jamie Furman (hope I got the spelling right) went 10.98 in. (I know I cant launch my car that well, but it's nice knowing the car has the capability)

...and just think, 1/4 mile runs isn't the strong suit of a corvette.

Considering you can pick up a used C6Z06 in the low to mid $40k range , I think it'd be very hard to beat the bang for the buck factor they bring to the table.

BTW, I'm hooked on the supercar show too..

Here is what altitude does.... This should be near a 128-130mph quarter mile car...

Unfortunately I know. I live in Texas near the NM border. We're at about 4k ft above here (also the highest octane we have is about 90 instead of 93).

I can really feel the difference when I take the car to Dallas or somewhere near sea level.

What's worse it looked like that car in your video is a ZR1, which is supercharged. My car is all motor, which is affected harder than the turbos and blown engines..:crying:

Most all motor C5/C6 run about 100mph at that track. C5s generally 98ish / Z06 generally 103-105ish. That covers 80% of the the ones that run. Then there are the highly modified or blown ones. Anywhere from 105ish to 120ish I have seen.
