Cop sleep disorders

    The article mentioned sleep apnea as one of the big problems, and noted its link to obesity. It's simple: Get in shape. There is no excuse for obese cops. Quit eating fast food, exercise and start giving a damn about how you look and how your body performs.

    Apnea is not always obesity related. I have had issues with it since I was 15there or younger even. It does affect a lot. I have always been curious as to what I could learn about sleep habits. I am curious as to what effect could be seen if you let a person sleep and wake up when they wanted and basically work Amy schedule they wanted. Odd and likely impractical but interesting to me

  4. Now they need to go through the list and check forced OT, OT to help pay bills and then correlate that to everything else. Then I'll start to pay attention. I agree that obesity hurts everything, sleeping disorders hurt things, but I wonder how much the OT hurts things and I also wonder how much the adrenaline rush and the activities that an officer undertake on a daily basis affect things.

    Not a cop, JMHO.

    I would sleep a whole lot better if I didn't have to moonlight at part time jobs until nearly 11 p.m twice a week then having to be at work at 0630. And that moonlighting cash is not paying for a bass boat, lavish vacations, and the like.

    I live well within my means. Small house, two safe cars, and I pay the bills on time or early. But still, it takes more than I make, topped out, to get by.

    I have worked multiple gigs for as long as I can remember. And it has affected my sleep. There was a time I was overweight but a few years ago I went low carb and lost quite a bit. Got back down into a reasonable waist size and feel a lot better.

    Eating well and cutting back on the caffeine helps me sleep better. But when that alarm clock goes off 5 1/2 hours after you set it, it makes for a long day.....especially when your facing a 15 hour day.
     
  6. You're right on the money. Obesity is only a small part of LE sleep issues. The far bigger issues lie with shift work, forced overtime, court schedules, under staffing, poor scheduling, side jobs to make ends meet and stress in general.

    Any of those factors alone is enough to cause poor or too little sleep. Combined, its enough to make a guy a virtual zombie. I know I was with my last gig.

    i'm not overweight and i have obstructive sleep apnea.

    several sleep studies and several devices later i now have it under control.

    All that and being scheduled for eight hours off between two eight(+) hour shifts. Throw some court time in there for further f'age.
     
  9. I would be curious to see if the sample size that they dealt with was representative of the department. A 79% obesity rate seems rather high. I would venture to guess that about 15-20% of my department is obese, maybe less. If 79% of your department is obese, something is wrong.

    That said, I very rarely get a 7 hours of sleep or more. Court is really the biggest factor for me. If I work midnights, I shouldn't have to go to court at noon. If I'm on nights, I shouldn't have to go to court for a parking ticket at 9am. A little leeway in court times would be greatly beneficial.

    I agree with what others have said. I think the poor sleep has more to do with the shift work and extra jobs/OT. You can't tell me that someone with small kids who gets home at 4-7am is going to get a lot of sleep when the kids are up and want to play. Most officers on my department have to work extra jobs because the pay isn't going up, but the cost of everything else is. I know some people who work a lot of extra jobs, but most only do so to make ends meat. Again, not lavish lifestyles, but just simple things like insurance for a family is over $500 a month. My sleep issues are mostly caused by the fact that I'm a morning person working at night.

    BMI makes me borderline morbidly obese, but I can still see my belt buckle.:dunno:

    My sleep doc told me that it is about 50/50 whether you will need a cpap if your neck size is larger than 17". Oddly, pro football players seem to use a lot of cpap machines.

    I've got insomnia. It mostly hits me the night before going back to work after a weekend. I lay down and eventually fall asleep, then I'm awake hours before I need to be. I'm not overweight and consider myself in good physical shape.

    Yeah, I knew an agent who suffered from it. He was in beyond good shape and had come to us from a super duper military commando unit. He finally had an operation to fix his.

    12 hour shifts is a challenge to stay in shape on for me anyway. Mids too.

    Sleep or lack or it has always been a problem and it always wll be. The best things to do are to stay healthy, eat right, no caffine within 4-8 hours of bedtime, and make sure you do everything you can to get as much sleep as possible.

    As it is now with my work schedule I can do most of those on most days. The downside is that I get about at most 2 hours before bed to spend time with the wife. When the kids is born I think I am just going to come home and get ready for bed and just be in bed trying to sleep for 10 hours and whatever time I get asleep is what I get.

    There is an agency in the same town that is hiring laterals and has a program where you can work Monday-Friday 8 to 5 in an air-conditioned courtroom with a comfy chair...:whistling:

    I want to beat my head against a wall anytime I have to sit in court waiting for my case to come up. I can't imagine sitting in there for a year. And then doing it every few years.

    How do you do it?
