Gotta love when people are held accountable.

Couldn't disagree more, when it happens so often that it becomes a running joke something has to be done. A precedent needs to be set and this does just that.

The city and their insurance are the ones who pays which trickles down to society in the end.

Pets are either property or they are not. If pets are not considered property, then they should no longer be able to be bought or kept. I agree that the family should receive compensation, but $600,000 is insane.

If I shoot a police dog, what is the penalty?
Everyone is equal under the law, right?

You can say that about a wrongful shooting of a person.

    What is your point?

I think this is great. I agree $600,000 is a huge amount, but I have seen quite a few stories of family dogs being killed by officers lately. Even if a dog is actually aggressive officers have many other ways to deal with them besides a bullet.

I hope this gives them some peace. I also hope this gives the police some paws.

The article says the police went thru the occupants' house while they were getting the dog to the vet.

For that alone they should have been fined and fired.

There ya go. I always wondered about that. If they claim that dogs are property, etc, why is it such a big penalty to kick or shoot a police dog? THey are just a dog, property, like the window of a cop car.

So, can you no longer buy dogs in Maryland? They are family, not property now right? You can't buy kids because you want kids in the family, why can you buy dogs to be part of the family.

I can see compensation for damage to property, but this isn't even close to killing a family member.

The Jenkins’ lawyer Cary J. Hansel said verdict, "The verdict makes it clear that Maryland citizens will not tolerate the killing and maiming of innocent family pets by those in positions of power." He noted that the law was lagging behind society's view that pets are more than property and are seen as family members. "I think it's important for the development of the law that pets be treated as animal family members."

I'm pleased with this ruling. LE has developed a completely cavalier attitude about killing family pets in the name of 'officer safety' and it must end.

My dog is more important than your entire family as far as I'm concerned. So yup, it's as much killing a family member as shooting a kid would be.
