Convertible Holder IWB/OWB?

Discussion in 'Carry Issues' started by BBSRQ, Aug 7, 2012.

  1. I know there are some out there including kydex models. Anyone have any experience with one? Likes/dislikes? Ease of changing from one to the other?

I've used my Kydex holsters as IWB and OWB both. Here she is:

I normally run it OWB with 2 inch loops these days but I've worn it both ways.

OWB it's very comfortable and still very concealable. I'm about 140lbs 5"10' so I have a very small frame, but I can still carry a full size M&P under a t-shirt if the shirt is a size larger than I normally wear. I usually just wear a button up shirt over it.

IWB it isn't quite as comfortable as my supertuck, though that should be expected since it's hard plastic against your body instead of leather. It's a little easier to conceal since it blends in with your profile more - what with being inside your pants and all. You could also tuck your shirt in this way.

For this post I just took the IWB clips off my Supertuck and slapped them on my Kydex holster. It's as simple as undoing a few chicago screws, very simple process.

    Message continues, too many pics...

So IWB even of I pull my shirt tight you can't see the weapon, just the pants, at least where the weapon is IN the pants.

tl;dr Super easy to change config, very concealable, not as comfortable IWB as hybrid holster or pure leather holster

  4. Thanks for that report. I appreciate the time you took to do it. Am I right that you basically made this convertible yourself? (i.e. it wasn't designed specifically for that?) What brand is it?

Pretty much all the big Kydex brands are IWB/OWB convertible, all you have to is swap out the loops/clips. They usually come with OWB loops but you can buy various IWB clips or soft loops that will attach to them easily. The one I'm showing is one I made, I'm a Kydex guy.

I've been making them for about 7 months or so.

I started making Kydex holsters because of the long turn around times on the big guys, like Raven's 4 month wait. Of course, then you have to make a bunch for your friends, then their friends who offer you money...and it goes on, and soon you're getting a business license!

I think Kydex really excels at what a holster is supposed to do - hold your weapon, help conceal it, and let you get it when you need to. Since there's no active retention you won't fumble over any snaps or buttons, or shoot yourself in the leg pressing in a lever when you draw like that guy on Youtube. But the passive retention is enough such that you can do cartwheels and handstands without losing your weapon, so I feel like it's the best solution as far as raw carry goes.

They also look hella cool! But maybe you shouldn't listen to me, I'm biased. Never as a barber if you need a hair cut, after all ;)

I have a X-Concealment that I carry the G27 in with Atomic Dog Holsters tuckable IWB loops and just received some X-Concealment wings the other day. I used to wear the G27 IWB all the time, however, the DB9 is taking that role for the summer. I'm interested in trying the wings OWB with a cover garment this fall/winter. It isn't hard to switch, but you are going to need a screwdriver to switch them out. It consists of 2 screws per side that need to be switched out. I personally love carrying in kydex when possible.

  9. What I had in mind was something like the CompTac Minotaur MTAC with a leather back but then you can remove the holster and attach a paddle or belt loop type arrangement. I think they actually offer that ability but I don't think they hve a package.

Just wondering, where do you buy the Kydex sheets and fasteners? I assume you heat it to get it to conform. How do you do that?
