My brother's computer (home built by me several years ago) finally bit the dust. It was a 533 Celleron that I had OC'd to 800 MHz with 512 of PC100 memory, 50 gigs of hard disk space bla bla bla.

The dang thing won't post. When I hit the power button it gives 1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps. I tried a different video card and pulling out various components... no dice.

Anyway, I think I can salvage everything but the motherboard/processor. Does anyone know of a CHEAP combo that I can still use the same RAM? I know they made Socket A boards that would take PC100 and up to an Athalon 1600+. Of course I can't find anything on NewEgg or Mwave (my normal online retailers). I'm just trying to get him up and running. He is like me and doesn't play games so anything above 1GHz would be fine.

Anything that runs PC100 will be cheap!

But that's putting the cart before the horse...this is probably fixable.

What you need to do is unplug the power cord, then pull the RAM out as well as the vid card. Then pull out the CMOS battery on the MOBO and hit the Power On button a few times.

    Wait 15 minutes or so.

Put the battery back in, plug in ONE RAM module, and reseat the vid card.

Plug the power cord back in and try booting it up again.

If it starts up, set the date & time and boot into Windows. Shut down and add another stick of RAM.

Repeat until you are back up to 512MB.

    Good luck.
