The manual for my 590 warns that closing with action with the barrel removed may cause damage to the firearm. Does anyone know what kind of damage might occur? It doesn't seem like anything would get battered/broken from this... I don't do it intentionally but it does happen from time to time accidentally and I'm just curious.

Interested as well - just read this in my new 835 tactical turkey manual.

Closing the bolt with no barrel installed sometimes causes the bolt to jump off the carrier.
This in turn can break the ejector screwed to the inside wall of the receiver.
I discovered this the hard way. HTH

Good to know. I've been running 590's for quite a while and never did know why it was bad to close the bolt without the barrel installed. Thanks for the good info.

According to the Mossberg rep I spoke with this morning on the phone the action can get "jammed up".
