I would bet it's more media hype than anything. The sun goes through cycles. It's normal.

It's also normal for my Wife to go thru cycles, doesn't make it any less of a PITA when she flares in my direction.

I had one of those at one time. Key word, "HAD". Kicked her to the curb and got me a flareless model. Now she can "flare" at another unfortunate soul. :wavey:

Yes it's normal, but OTOH we've never been so dependent on electricity and satellites. Ever hear of the Carrington Event?

They are claiming it was the largest flare in 4 years. I don't recall any great disruptions 4 years ago. Come to think of it, I don't recall ANY disruptions!

Ageed, it was a close call to nothing happening in yet another solar flare event. Most of this hype seems to be NASA just trying to scare people enough that we keep them around. Now that the shuttle program is killed it's time to really start cutting into the biggest waste in our budget.

    I can:

"...On March 13th, 1989 a huge solar induced magnetic storm played havoc with the ionosphere, and the earth's magnetic field. This storm, the second largest storm experienced in the past 50 years, totally shut down Hydro-Quebec, the power grid servicing Canada's Quebec province. ..."
