Not sure I know the difference. I have a tac force vest w/ cross draw pistol. I think it's great. I saw a nice tac vest on here for sale just the other day.

It had more mag pouches instead of the pistol holster which may be better. The pistol can go on the belt. Haven't decided what I like better yet...

I generally use a Tactical Taylor or BlackHawk tac vest when I'm running my AR15's, and a simple BlackHawk chest rig when I'm running my AK's. The closest thing I could give you to a reason is that the beauty of an AK is its simplicity, and I've extended that into my web gear for it also.

Both a good vest and a good chest rig are comfortable, so it really comes down to personal preference and whether you need the extra pockets of a vest to hold your other gear.

I'd say it depends on what your intended use for it would be.

I currently have 3, one Weesatch (plate carrier) & two surplus Chinese chest pouch rigs.

The Weesatch holds 10 AR magazines or 5 AK magazines & is easy to retrieve them in a hurry, making it great for quick combat reloads but it is too bulky for just dorking around at the range with.

The cheap surplus Chinese pouches are decent enough for holding a few spare AK magazines but they are much slower to retrieve the magazines out of when compared to the Weesatch, they are however a lot less heavy & bulky & thus a lot more range friendly.

The cross draw / mag vests are ok I guess, but for me I like to keep my sidearm on my belt, but that's more of a muscle memory / instinctiveness sort of thing, when split seconds count I don't want to instinctively reach for my pistol in an emergency situation only to find it's not there, not really an issue of it's for range use only.

But I suppose if you were to train with it enough that that sort of muscle memory concern wouldn't be that much of an issue in an emergency scenario.

    BLUF: Chest-rig.

Speaking just to me & my needs. If there were no chest rigs, I still wouldn't run a full-blown vest. (Would go back to modularity of ALICE H configuration.)

I have a Chicom that works for some spares actually 'cause it fits so close to my lanky frame, but I don't do a 210 round loadout. My regular goto chest-rig that's with the gun will accept 4 mags, or you can do 3 and stick something in the 4th, could be a pistol as they're shock-corded with sufficient flaps. But pistol is normally on a separate holster and belt, cross between under-arm and x-draw. Out of the way, but I prefer it on my person if I shuck the rig for whatever reason. The rig is light, quiet, and has enough MOLLE room for other things like a dump pouch, personal BOK, inverted field-knife.

Came with 2 sets of straps allowing a H-harness type hang, or a Chicom Y. Also has plenty of each with it, so adjustable from summer to winter (when wearing heavy layers). Also the straps are light enough that ruck straps on top of them don't get bothersome. Compact enough that the whole thing folds up into the storage area in the rifle bag.

My only complaint nowadays is that there are few designers of such things that understand the difference in mags. Typically they take a 30-round AR design and just scale it up, without accounting for the more proper curve (when getting into 30-rd mags) of an AK. Hence, one is often 'playing' with flaps over AK mags to get them "just right." At least the pouches on my rig have completely removable covers with velcro inside, so one can re-attach them to get the optimum angle over an AK mag.

    I like it. :)

Nice looking rig as well. Eagle's are good & workmanlike too.

This is mine; similar price range too. Absent these I'd have gotten an Eagle as well. I like the looks of the one you listed; went with a single mag/pouch approach primarily because when I get Michelin-man clothes on at -15 in the woods I'm already "protruding" and catching branches more than I'd care to. Lots of good kit out there; seems to be more & more folks are addressing the need for a variety of missions.

^^^ The Insurgent and the Micro chest rigs look very nice. I'm looking at this eagle one...

    http://www.skdtac.com/Eagle_AK47_Chest_Rig_6_Mag_p/eag.572.htm

I'm thinking of ditching the cross draw vest for a lighter rig.

Question about these rigs... Are they real tight with AK mags? I'm going to end up running a VZ.58 with these and the mags are a bit wider from what I can tell.

There are some other pics on the site. Not a good shot of the back though. I was thinking of getting that rig, and sticking a double pistol mag pouch on one side and a roll up dump pouch on the other. VZ.58 mags better fit!

The Insurgent's pouches are sufficient for actual AK mags, Bulgarians to COMBLOC ridgebacks. The velcro covers can be positioned at a different angle if you like, and they are shock-corded at the bottom. I always loosen the cords anyway to loadup, then draw each one as tight as needed and the excess actually goes under the flap of the pouch to its right. Looked at some pics of a VZ that Gabe Suarez was using last year while he was conducting some training in CZ. I can see no reason your VZ mags shouldn't fit; don't think they're actually any wider overall than a steel ridgeback.

I'm also looking into the Eagle Industries AK chest rigs.
Can't decide which one to get. Currently leaning towards the CR-AK47/6-MS.

CR-AK47/6-MS (khaki or ranger green) $85.80

CR-AK47-MS (black, khaki, ranger green, olive drab or ACU) $79.27

CP-SF-30-AK (black, olive drab or woodland camo) $207.94

I agree. That model looks perfect. The second only holds three mags, The last one looks way too bulky for my needs.

The Micro chest rig looks great but I have no idea what I'd use that extra storage pouch for. I'd rather just have the third mag pouch.

I have the eagle rig that holds 6 mags.
Seems fine for range use or shtf.
However, removal can be cumbersome as each pouch is kinda
tight and the mag flange can snag on parts of the rig when removing it so I'd think for competition you'd want something more like the boar setup . . .

    Chest rig.

I've worn a tac vest on duty and they trap heat badly, and are not exactly modular (some of the newer ones are).

A chest rig i can set up how i like it is my personal choice after having worn both all day, every day for about 3 years.

I'm bumping this thread to say no one has the Eagle 6 mag in stock! :steamed:

The Templar Insurgent chest rig looks like a good choice but I'm having trouble finding other reviews on it.

Also, I came across this rig made by 762 tactical. These look very nice for the price and it does everything the eagle can do. Has anyone ever seen these?

    Hey WIG19,

I see "sadly missing" (the instructor) is running the Insurgent chest rig in this series of nutnfancy videos.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2QUcKjP8KI

Also, on the Templar website you linked to... Call me crazy but that IS a VZ.58 in the first couple of pictures. I've been doing my homework. I need to get this purchase right the first time.
