Chambered in 5.56 Nato?

Discussion in 'Black Rifle Forum' started by M&P Shooter, Nov 15, 2011.

  1. Yes, it is chambered for 5.56 so it will shoot 5.56 and .223.

If it is chambered for .223, then it can only shoot .223.

As others have said, shooting .223 will not be a problem, just a little lower velocity than 5.56. The 1/7 twist will be good for ~55 grain and heavier. Every barrel is different, though, so sometimes you need to experiment a little to figure out what works best with your individual barrel.

As others have said, you’ll be good with both .223 & 5.56. 55 grain and up.

Sorry about the Hijack... But what is the difference between the 5.56 and the .223? I have a neighbor that says he was a Ranger... and says that the only difference is that the 5.56 has a ball tucked in behind the main projectile.

Your friend does not know what he is talking about. There is no "ball" behind the projectile. Read this for everything you could possibly want to know about .223/5.56 ammo:

That is hilarious. Are you sure you understood what he said? Otherwise your friend is very misinformed.

No, I am sure he has no idea what he is talking about... But I didn't really have the info to call him out on it either, so I just kept my mouth shut.

It is safe to fire 223 ammunition in what is now called a 5.56 chamber in an AR15. When Colt bought the rights to the AR15 from Armalite it had a standard 223 Remington chamber and non-chrome lined bore. At the time there wasn't a good method to chrome line a 22 caliber bore and the methods used in larger bores didn't work well. Colt patented a method to chrome line 22 caliber rifle barrels. Also Colt wanted to make the AR15 more reliable and patented a special chamber that made the AR15 more reliable. This became known as a 5.56 chamber in AR15 rifles. Many match shooters found that the Colt chamber design was less accurate than the SAAMI 223 Remington chamber. The 223 Remington was originally design bullets no heavier than 55 grains and when match shooters used heavier bullets in the tighter SAAMI chamber they often had problems with function and overpressure. There have been many match chambers developed for the AR15 to be more accurate than the Colt "5.56" chamber but able to use heavy bullets. The Colt patents have since expired and their designs are often the most reliable in other brands of AR15 type rifles. One of the reason the Colt designed chamber has become popular is when NATO standardized the 5.56 cartridge 30 years ago, which was long after the Colt AR15 upgrades, NATO chose the Belgian designed SS-109 cartridge which uses a long, dual core (steel and lead) bullet and has a higher chamber pressure limit than previous 5.56 military cartridges. The American version of the SS-109 cartridge is the M855 cartridge.

Was he talking about a steel/tungsten pentrator? Maybe he misunderstood what he was told.

Honestly I think he is just retarded and doesn't know what he is talking about, I even question his Ranger status...
