In Texas we have concealed carry as long as a reasonable effort is put forth to conceal the firearm. Does that mean that additional magazines can be open carried legally? What are different ways that LE might deal with something like this?

I'm not from Texas, so take my advice with a huge grain of salt. I would guess that OC of magazines and ammunition would be considered legal if for no other reason than I imagine that the legislature has never thought to address the issue. I would also guess that you would be significantly less likely to have random citizens call the police on you for open display of ammunition than for open carry of a firearm unless you were doing something completely off the wall like strapping bandoliers of .50 cal across your torso like Rambo or something. A typical magazine pouch, particularly a closed mag pouch, would likely be overlooked by the vast, vast majority of non- gun owners. They simply won't know what it is. Therefore, they won't freak out and call in a MWAG.

A few years ago my wife bought me a Fozzy Bear action figure where he's wearing the cop uniform from the old Muppet Show sketches. It came with a detachable radio, handcuffs, and flashlight. It also has a detachable enclosed asp holder, baton, and a detachable double magazine pouch... but no firearm. I keep it on my desk at work and it always makes me chuckle that the libtards who designed it couldn't imagine giving Fozzy an eeeeeeevil gun even if he was a cop but left the mag pouch.

Your post is sure to generate an epic thread arguing the existance of RAS to stop and detain a person who is openly wearing bandoliers full of ammunition, but whose weapon is concealed. I've got to think on that a little bit more. The easy answer is "It depends on the totality of the circumstances."

My bet is that openly carrying a handgun is prohibited and that a magazine does not meet the definition of a handgun, thus it would be legal to "openly" carry a spare magazine.

    Not that I would.

In an urban setting, OC'ing either is a little goofy. That said, as a general rule, if you're going to conceal one, conceal the other.

I wouldn't do it, but that's just me. Because something is technically legal does not mean it is a good idea. However, you may have your reasons......
