My 2001 Nissan Xterra with 130k miles was running fine and I was at a stop light when the engine just died. It turned over but wouldnt start.

Note: about an hour earlier before it died, the car didnt start on the first crank but then started on the 2nd.

It had to be towed to a shop.

I had the battery tested at autozone and it is perfectly fine. The fluids are fine. It drove 400 miles from San Francisco to LA to Vegas fine 30 days ago. (about 700 miles total)

Do you guys think its a dead alternator? Or timing belt? If its the timing belt...whats the ball park price to have it fixed on a V6?

As noted above, the electronics will have to be diagnosed.

If it cranks, the battery's OK.

When Autozone tested your battery, they should also have tested the alternator to make sure it was charging the battery...and if the alternator was dead, your battery probably would be too.

Timing belts breaking usually do horrible things to the engine, no?

If it was towed to a shop, have they looked at it yet and told you what they think the problem is? They're in a much better position to diagnose it than the GT brain trust.

If it was an 'interference engine', yes.

    Fortunately, most are not...

Im waiting for the shop to call and I was just wondering what you guys thought? I'll have an answer soon hopefully. I was just on the computer and figured I'd ask.

I hope its simply a dead fuel pump lol.

    Thanks
