Hey guys, I am interested in getting a quicker car, preferably one that handles well. I know quite a few of you guys are into cars, and was wondering if you could give me some advice.

My budget will be a max of 8k, and the C4's seem to fit quite nicely within that budget. They seem like they are decently quick and handle well. I want something that will do 0-60 in at least under 6 seconds.

What should I look out for with these older vette's? Are they decent for the money, or will I constantly be spending 5k a year in repair bills?

Any other better options out there?

I'd love something like this (random internet pic)

    Thanks,

    Nathan

I would suggest a 1989-1991 6-speed manual. They have a lower HP engine, but with 350lb-ft of torque they are a real neck snapper. They don't have a high HP number compared to 1992+ and can be found for lower prices.

I own a `91 and will never sell it.

The C4 is probably the worst Corvette.

The C4 were nice performers and drivers back when, but were problematic well before their time... I still like the styling, but the C5's are by far and away better cars all the way around... For example, better engines, transmissions, brakes, aerodynamics, bells and whistles, strcutural integrity, etc...

I realize newer ones are better, but is there any way to do better for the money?

C4s are dogs. For $8k you can get an incredibly fast Miata that will out handle most anything out there. Another option would be an S2000, those are great fun.

    I have a 1993 6-speed.
I will say this about my Vette- everything is expensive labor wise. Clutches are expensive. Suspension work is expensive. If you have the proper tools and know what you are doing, they're not too bad.

My Vette's been a white elephant, but it's fun to drive!!!

If you really want a C4 vette, get the lowest milage, best condition, later ('92-'96) C4 you can afford.

Unless it was a C4 ZR1, I wouldn't get one and they are a lot more than $8k.

C4 makes a good cheap track car though.

I'm not sure since we've had quite a few Corvettes but aren't the C-4's the ones that are so hard to get out of??

My all-time favorite was the '62, but it seems that they just keep getting better.

I don't know. The C3's had some pretty bad ones, too, and that's coming from a dyed in the wool Vette fan. I could never warm up to the boxy style of the C4 but they did do one thing right. That square hood means you can get to the whole engine. The access is phenomenal.

Friend of the family bought a really nice convertible C4. He had to put some money into it. Things like fuel lines, etc. You're looking at a 16-29 years old vehicle. Check everything. Assume anything rubber or plastic is rotten.

Have had my 89 for about 4 years now and couldn't be happier.

It's and original 54k miles car and mostly stock and has been trouble free.

I personally like the looks better than the c5 or 6.

My dad has a 2007 c6 he bought new and I would just as soon drive mine as his, even though it's alot faster than mine

You can do research on www.corvetteforum.com
and you will find recommendations for a C5 Corvette, usually a 2001 thru 2004. You might find a decent C4, but there are a lot of issues which can be found on the forums. Five months ago I bought a 2002 C5 coupe because money wise, style wise, and dependable wise it fit the bill, and I am happy with my decision. It has a LS1 350 HP motor, really is a easy car to drive and fun to drive also. I strongly urge you to save more money or borrow money to get at least a 2001 or 2002 C5 Corvette.
