Has there ever been an attempt made to design a bullet with moving parts?

I'm not talking about an RPG or anything like that. I'm talking about common calibers like 9mm, .45acp, .223 or .308 but maybe the bullet has a hollow cavity that conceals fins/razors/points/etc. to make it more efficient. Maybe once in flight the centrifical force caused by the bullet's rotation causes the moving parts/appendages to deploy and make it more efficient.

Is that something best left to Hollywood or has it actually been tried?

    Thanks!

I overheard a guy at the range. He was talking about placing a steel BB in hollow points. Most likely illegal. Don't know what effect it may have? I'd geuss it would just hit like a FMJ. According to him it shattered on impact. I would never try it myself. And i think it was all BS.

someone makes a 12 gauge that has fins that come out after it leaves the barrel. i think it had to do with an milatry round that explodes. saw it on future weapons.

The Glaser Safety Slug is a variant of the BB in a hollow point idea. The tip has a blue plastic ball that is forced into the cavity of the bullet that contains small bird shot. Also there is another round that that has some sort of material that turns to a fine powder on impact, it is supposed to be very effective too. Also Taser has a new shotgun round that uses the same technology as their handheld units.

There have been plenty of short lived speciality rounds, experimental and military rounds that have contained various items both inside the bullet and as the bullet itself.

    Some examples:

Various "Exploder" handgun rounds (Velet, Velex, Exammo, Devastator etc.).
Military explosive rounds including Raufoss rounds.

    Military SPIW flechette rifle rounds.

Nazi German 7.65 Browning "poison" bullet.
9mm Cobra HSA "anti-hijacking" round that had small metal spikes in the core.
45ACP "delayed expansion" shotshell with a 4-part sabot.

45ACP & 12ga SCMITR that contained several arrowhead shapedflat pieces of metal contained in a white plastic sabot.
Omni-Shock rounds with a metal Phillips head screw in the bullet.
    Etc, etc...
Theyre not exactly "moving parts", but they are a departure from the standard small arms projectile.

    Taser 12ga SGN round.

Link showing a pic of numerous handgun AP rounds including the 45ACP SCMITR and Omni-Shock and further down a great photo showing the Cobra HSA 9mm round (including a sectioned round).
