I have a computer with a copied XP that is shutting itself down after a short period of time when online. Yes I am buying XP Pro tomorrow. Do I need to format the hard drive or will the new version over write the old XP Pro version?

    Thanks

If your copy is a legit copy, with a stolen/hakz0rd serial, you can just change it to a valid one. Do a search on google for "change windows xp key".

You'll still have to buy the key, but simply changing the key will save you a lot of work.

You could also just buy an XP license for about 25% of the cost of the disk....;Q

If you're shutting down, then someone is probably taking advantage of your unpatched system, where someone can send RPC signals to engage in shutdown procedures.

This was fixed in the first service pack.
