I wanted to recommend some good ammo choices for my neighbor. She's not interested in getting a more powerful handgun, so .38 will have to do...

    I would say..........The Cor-Bon 110g DPX looks like a good choice for .38spl.
    Muzzle Velocity:</B> 1050 fps
    Muzzle Energy:</B> 269 ft. lbs.

    Looks good on penetration also.

ETA: how long of a barrel?

If she has a snubnose .38, then Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 135 +P would be a good choice.

Barrel length would help, but you'd be safe with the 135gr Gold Dot or Rem FBI load.

Have you checked her gun? Is it rated for +P ammo? You might want to make sure before you recommend any ammo.

I'd use the Short Barrel 135gr +P Gold Dot in ANY .38 revolver. According to Speer it works very well out of 4" revolvers as well.

barrel length matters. is it a nightstand gun or a carry piece? I havn't had a problem with Remington 158gr +P LSWCHP, yet.

Not dissin' the hornady, but ol' skool still works fine.

One of two picks. 1. Speer Gold Dot 135 grain +P. 2.The 158 grain LSWCHP from any of the major ammo companies. As long as the gun is rated for +P.

I have been using the speer gold dot 135 sb load for a while. But, I have not been able to locate it lately. So I got a box of winchester ranger 130 grain +P.
These are not the bonded ones. I wanted the talon effects. These are suppose to work good in short barrels too. The remington 158 LHP +P that was mentioned is also a good load for different lengths of barrels too.
    Hope that helps.

    John!

If the firearm is rated for +P, I recommend the good old FBI load of 158Gr. Lead semi-wadcutter HP +P.

Interesting way you are asking the question. Reading between the lines makes me wonder if :

    1. You don't think .38 is very good. Or that ideally, a more powerful round should be carried.

    2. She does not want much recoil.

Anyway, if she is concerned about recoil, then perhaps try any of the standard 148gr wadcutters (Winchester, Remington, etc). They are lower recoil, yet the wadcutter is generally thought of as a good self-defense design (even though developed for clean target holes).

Unless she's dead set on a revolver a 9mm semi might be easier to shoot. A snubby .38 Special has more recoil especially with +P. And personally I can't hit the broadside of a barn with one. If it's a longer heavier revolver that issue diminishes.
