I have done some searching and have had lackluster results. I am looking for, for lack of a better adjective, the "best" all around defensive .223/5.56 round. I do not care about the price. This will not be my range ammo, but will be added to my stash for the looming apocalypse. :tongueout:. My research has led me to Speer's Gold Dot .223 round, but, I can't seem to find anyone that carries it.

If it helps, my gun is a Colt LE6940.

    Thanks in advance my friends.

    I'd say Hornady 75gr 5.56 TAP.

hard to say what is the best. everyone will have their own. most companys will say they are the best. when it comes down to the .223/556 it is hard to beat military ball ammo. the stuff that is used now. made to do one thing, kill.

Eh, while M855 does the job within its velocity constraints, I would much rather have TAP in my rifle.

That said, I think Corbon DPX with the barnes X bullet, is probably the best stuff on the market.

Where can I find the Hornaday 5.56 Tap 75 gr? I can't seem to find it at my usual sources. e.g. ammunitiontogo, AIM Surplus, MidwayUSA, Cheaper Than Dirt, etc. :dunno:

It looks like ATG has it in .223, but not 5.56. Blaaah.

My first choice is also the Hornady 75 gr TAP. I also have very good results with Black Hills 75 or 77gr. Your 6940 will do very well with these.

I am happy with XM193. In all my ARs based on twist rate and barrel lengths I feel I will get the fragmentation at ranges I might need to use it. MY SBR will only hold 2700 FPS out to about 50 yards so it might be better to switch to a heavier round but I prefer to keep my stash ammo the same. Plus at that cost I don't worry about taking some of it out and shoot it. For range training I mostly use Wolf.

Rather than switch around and have "special occasion" ammo, I use 62gr green tip rounds.

5.56 being an NATO round, I don't think you can get it in a JHP? Only JHP is .223 right? :dunno:

This is what I've been thinking for a SHTF stash...

No, you can get it in JHP, its still a popular caliber. The only restrictions upon military ammo, is enforced by the military, on the military.

They make 5.56 75gr TAP but it is very hard to find, and expensive when you can.

You won’t go wrong with 75g TAP if you have a 1:7 barrel. There are no magic bullets, shot placement is the key.

There is a thread on M4Car and ARFCOM about what the best available ammo out there. I'd have titled the thread the best ammo YOU can get. If Tap is the best ammo but you can't find any or they wont sell you any because your not a COP it makes it not the best ammo YOU can get.
