I have never had a 1911 45 before but with my tax return it will happen. I am partial to Sigs and Glocks but open to any high quality single stack 45 that is match quality 4-5" barrel. I looked at Kimbers Gold Match II and Sigs P220 Super Match and both seem nice. I need some real world input. I want the best and most reliable gun I can afford. I am also someone that likes the way a gun looks too. Gotta be some hot eye candy! OK, open the can of worms and discuss...:whistling:

You have to go with Les Baer.

Some of their models are under $2000 and they're certainly the best in that price range.

Do you have to order guns from Les Baer or do they sell via gun shops too?

I only saw an order form on the LB web site. I'll have to call them to see who they have in SC or NC.

Definitely Baer. The Premier II and the Thunder Ranch Special can both be found for a bit under $2000. They are relative bargains in that price range. My Premier II has been a solid favorite of mine for several years now, and has never given me a problem.

I am a big fan of Baer at the pricepoint. I would also consider an S&W performance center. They seem to be a bargain as well and can be had for significantly less than MSRP. A local shop has a stainless one they want to get rid of (new but hasn't moved for a while) they have $1450 on it now.

I've had decent luck with my $975 Dan Wesson CBOB and my $1275 Kimber compact CDP after some initial heartache...but if I had an extra $2k dedicated for 1911 goodness I'd give the used Wilson market a long, hard look!

You can save $200-300 by ordering from one of the dealers Quack has listed. The sales tax would be half of that. I got mine from Sporting Arms and they were great to deal with but John at Proload is a very nice guy as well.

I can suggest a few good choices under 2k

A Les Baer, which has already been mentioned, is a great choice. I ordered my TRS locally for $1740 OTD.

A Springfield Custom Carry can be had for around $1800.

If you order from George at gunslingers you could get a Ed Brown Special Forces for $1990? shipped, so whatever your transfer fees are.

If you could come up with an extra $75 or so you could get a Nighthawk GRP from George for around $2050.

The prices are from when I asked George back in December, so they might have changed some. The GRP was priced with a few extra options so you might get one for less.

Dan Wesson in my opinion. My Pointman shoots as well as my Les Premier at about half the price. I think it's the best value out there for a 1911 hands down.

Les Baer TRS as mentioned or a Dan Wesson Valor are pretty much the list for me in that price range.

If I may throw in my 2 cents worth.... Les Baer, Wilson, and/or something from the Springfield Custom Shop are all great choices. I would really like Nighthawk, but their pistols start at over $2K (which doesn't meet the OP's criteria). I would even suggest not overlooking the STI Lawman or Sentinel Premier. Those are two of STI's higher end single stacks. They start at about $1400 and $1800 respectively....
