A fatal accident has taken the life of an off-duty Beaumont firefighter. Galen Key of the Beaumont firefighters Union says 50-year-old Mike Pierre died in the accident. Beaumont Police Officer Crystal Holmes says Pierre may have suffered a medical emergency prior to losing control of his SUV. It happened on the southbound side of Eastex Freeway near the 11th Street exit. The accident occurred around 6:30 Thursday evening when Pierre's SUV went through the median and struck a protective cable barrier. It then veered back across the freeway into the grassy area on the 11th Street overpass, where it stopped. Beaumont firefighters gathered at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth where Pierre was taken for treatment and later pronounced dead. Thursday, those firefighters shared their memories of Pierre and his commitment to the fire department. Pierre was a 25 year veteran of the Beaumont Fire Department.
