I don't know for sure, but would guess you'd need faster loads from shorter barrels; and faster opening bullets, since reduced barrel length usually results in reduced velocity.

Is there a general "rule of thumb" about type of SD projectile preferred for 3.5" vs 4.5" barrels? (That is G26 vs G17; G39 vs G38; etc.)

I load my own & have a buddy with a chrono so I can fine tune each load to my guns.
Simple way to do that with different powders, bullets, etc..

I run Speer 135g +P .38 SPL ammo designed for short barrels in my Ruger LCR.

Published gelatin test shows it penetrates and expands better than any other .38 SPL round out of a short barrel. It doesn't have the best velocity of the rounds tested, so bullet design must be the answer.

I use a 9mm +p+ 115gr JHP (Winchester), and it chronos at over 1400 FPS out of my G17. I trust this load for just about anything.

I guess what the OP is saying is that using the lighter bullets in shorter barrels to get decent velocities. The other train of thought is that the heavier for caliber loads usually lose less velocity in percentage compared to the lighter loads.

My personal experience is that the light and fast rounds cause a lot more recoil and muzzle blast (flash) and are very loud in shorter barrel weapons, while in longer barrels it doesn't make as much of a difference.

The muzzle flash from my +p+ 9mm carry load is fierce.
