Mas referred a poster to BBTI, http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/9luger.html.

BBTI will give me the velocity of each round for every length of barrel. I haven't explored it far enough to know about this though:

Is there a resource that gives optimum velocity for best expansion in various HP loads in "target medium"?

I ask because I was rather disappointed with expansion of my Gold Dots out of my G27 as compared with my old G22.

Most JHPs seem to be optimum in 4" barrels (or 5" with .45s. but 4" works fine). Yes, you are going to have less expansion with 3.5" and shorter. That's the nature of the beast. Don't sweat it though, penetration is what matters more.

That said, this issue is probably more noticeable with bonded bullets like Gold Dots. HSTs and Ranger-Ts might expand a little more from shorter barrels.

IMO, a Glock 23 may be about the best carry gun possible. Ideal combination of size, weight, barrel, power, capacity. (Glock 19/32 too).

Out to 18inches of barrel length, and for several calibers. This was quite a project!

While the velocities aren't an exact match to what some folks get with their actual handguns (then again, with so many distinct barrels or just plain different guns who does?) I do find it an interesting resource.

Think about it: they're ruining one TC Contender barrel for each caliber tested! That can't be cheap. Then a year from now if they test some new-fangled uber-bullet they have to go get a new TC barrel 'cause the old one is cut all the way down to 3".

Does TC Contenders come with an 18-inch barrel?

I think my GD were 165 gr (.40's obviously).

165gr Gold Dots are a bit light on expansion anyway, even under ideal conditions. Great penetration though.

T C Contender carbine barrels are 20" and then they start cutting. SJ 40

If you desire more expansion diameter look at the HST. Not an apples to oranges comparo but the .357sig HST I shot into wetpack out of my G33 averaged right around .700" diameter. And that is smaller 9mm bullet.

I'll have to second the HST if expansion is the OP's concern. I got .70" expansion from a .40 HST (180gr) fired into meat from a 3.2" barrel, so a 3.5" Glock 27 *should* do even better. The 180gr load in HST expands more than the 155 and 165gr offerings even though it's going slower......go figure. :dunno:

I'll remember this when I get my G22.
