    How do you set up Outlook Express so that when someone e-mails me they will get an auto-response message?

    First you don't use it at all.

    DO NOT USE OUTLOOK EXPRESS AS YOUR EMAIL CLIENT.

    Is there a way to set up an automated reply using Outlook Express?

    There sure is, Bronwyn Hillman passes this tip along for doing just that:

    1. Choose Tools + Inbox Assistant.
    2. Click Add.
    3. Select Account (and make a note whether your business or personal account is listed there).
    4. Click Reply With and then click Browse.
    5. If the Look In field doesn't say Desktop, click the Up One Level icon until it does.
    6. Depending on which account was listed in Step 3, double-click the appropriate business/personal EML (message) file you see listed. For example, if your personal account was listed in Step 3, double-click the personal reply you want to use.
    7. Click OK to finalize the rule.
    8. Repeat Steps 2 through 7 for your other account.
    9. Click OK to close the Inbox Assistant.

    you can set up a rule in most outlook versions, that says if you recieve an email that meets certain criteria, then do something specific, one of which is sending a reply.

    Go to Tools->Rules and Alerts

    that would require that your computer be on and connected to the internet with outlook express always checking for email. the best way to handle an autoreply is on the email server. If you have web access to your email server, check there. most autoreplys are handled by procmail on email servers.
