Auto Ordnance Thompson M1 - why is there grease in the stock ?

    Just curious, as I was shortening the LOP on my semi M1 the other night, and the cavity in the stock was filled with cosmoline (?) grease ... not certain why as it doesn't appear there is anything mechanical back there.
    Checked on another M1, and same thing - stuffed with grease.
    Anyone know why this was done ?
