I'm in my 50's. I've never even been in a convertible. I thought it might be fun to own one. My wife tells me they are for women drivers, not men drivers.

I can see some cars are aimed toward women. The Toyota Solara, the VW Beetles, the Chrysler Sebring to name a few. (Don't mean to step on any toes by saying that). But, is a Camaro or Mustang or Corvette convertible a girls car?:dunno:

Tell that to James Bond. I drive an S2000, and while I get made fun of by my friends for driving a miata, I guarantee I enjoy my drives much more than they do. My wife has nicknamed it "Superfemme".

The answer is no. They are not. Roadsters have long been seen as the purest driving cars by many people including me. I'm a man. A real hairy man. I have a Y chromosome.... and a red convertible.

It all depends on the TYPE of convertible.

I been in quite a few convertible's, and I love'm on summer nights when the temp drops below 250 fahr and you get the full auditory force of a strong sounding engine which is awesome... I don't like the looks, extra driving noise when I want a quiet ride, and possible safety risk... With that said, when I get in my 50's I'll hopefully give even less of a crud what other people think... Get what you want due to no other reason than that, and you're wife will respect you doing what you want.. Tell her I said you have full permission...

I've had friends who made fun of my Miata - until they came along for a ride and got the crap scared out of them by its handling and cornering abilities. As jbotstein said, roadsters are pure driving pleasure, and become almost a subconscious extension of you when you drive.

IMO, a real man drives what he wants and doesn't care what others may think.

In Florida it's really easy to drive with the top down almost every day of the year (except rainy days). I used to own ragtop and loved it. Who cares what other people think!

You drive for you, not for others.

I'd hesitate to call Rag-Tops chick-mobile. I think it's more a matter of women folk having larger paychecks to afford Drop Tops.

There are certain female oriented cars, like the last generation VW and the Solaris. I wouldn't label all convertibles chick-mobiles. That paint with too broad to a brush.

My father owned several Drop Tops he was born in in 1920.

Perhaps your wife is trying to head off the purchase of your mid-life crisis mobile?

    Yes.

Sure a guy can drive a convertible if he wants, but they absolutely "fit" a woman for some reason.

Excluding roadsters(2 seaters),convertibles generally don't handle as well and are heavier. That's why I've never had one.If having the wind in my hair was a higher priority than the former to me,I'd drive one regardless of what people might think.

So, is a Mustang convertible a chick car or a man's car?

I like the VW Thing. Best convertible ever, although a Karman Ghia convertible is pretty darn cool.

Who gives a **** about what others think? Your money, your car, everyone else has no opinion on the matter.
