I know that this probably sounds crazy. And right about now you're probably thinking "Jesus Rambo! Lose the war paint and chill out a little"

Well, please allow me to explain... father in law isn't much of a "gun-guy". Outside of his 2 or 3 hunting rifles, the only handgun he owns (that I know of) is a Smith and Wesson .44 Mag with a 5-6" barrel. I looked on and this was the closest match I could find.

Now, he uses this gun for concealed carry, as well as vehicle / home defense. In the near future I would like to help him make it a little more practical if you know what I mean. I thought that the addition of an accessory rail would be nice. That way, he could mount a streamlight or similar weapon light to his gun.

    Thanks for your help!

    It's pretty nice
S&W makes a 5" semi lug 686+ with a rail, they also make a 627 with a rail. Both would be better for SD unless he uses a very light 44mag or 44special. He'd also gain a rd. or two. Hook your old man up with a suitable carry gun is my advice.

Such rails are common place on competition guns, for instance like the Bianchi Cup. The gunsmith I worked with for years was always building such beasts. That said, due to bulk I don't know that I'd consider it more practical for SD at all, though I could certainly see it's use in hunting.
