I just picked up some mil spec ammo from my local shop and was wondering if anybody ever used it. It is the drab green shells with the black cap.

Yes, but AA60 is just Winchester 00 Buck in a brown cardboard box. Dark maroon w/ brass.

Post a pic of what you got...

What you said roadking07. This ammo functions as good as anyother. I think it has a cool look.

My 870 and 1100 love it. It cycles the 1100 without a problem. The patterning isnt bad. Not bad for the $4.50 per box i spent. I would stake my life on it!

Same stuff that Big 5 had on sale a couple of weeks ago. It's labeled as Winchester Military grade ammo. I still have a couple of boxes, and I've shot a few as well through my Benelli SuperNova. No problems with it and it felt like any other 00 buckshot I've put through the gun.

I was just looking at this stuff yesterday and couldn't decide whether I wanted it or not. You saved me the trouble of asking. Thanks.

    here, now
Sorry to bash your ammo, but the mil-spec stuff with green cases and coated brass is garbage. I patterned this ammo out of all of my shotguns and it has the largest spread of any 00 buck I've ever used. For range use or SHTF use I guess it's OK - it beats nothing. I will not use it for anything but playing around.

The spread is far too big to hunt with IMO, too big for home defense as you are accountable for all 9 pellets and they are extremely unpredictable with a bunch of fliers.

Buy some Federal Flitecontrol if you want some premium 00 buck. I hunt with 00 9 pellet full power flite control. I defend my home with 00 8 pellet reduced recoil flite control. They also make a low recoil 9 pellet 00 buck.

In my experience all of the flitecontrol 00 loads pattern like a slug out to roughly 25 feet. It is absolutely amazing stuff.

The Hornady TAP, Winchester Ranger and Federal Flitecontrol are all great buckshot loadings that maintain a tight pattern.

Ever tear one open? It looks like someone ran the buck over with a dough-roller or something, lol. Stuff is as low-quality as it gets, but still carries a premium price because "It's Military Grade!". Pass.

  15. Military contract=lowest bidder. I'd take most commercial ammo over military stuff.

Except in the case of XM193 from Federal, which I have found to be quite accurate for FMJ. PPU M855 also shot very well. I was shooting about 1.8MOA with it at 200 yards for 10-shot groups from the AR. XM193 was doing about 2MOA. Very good for FMJ, imho. It was also a lot hotter than the remington commercial fodder.

Yes, I've fired it. Yes, it's not that great either.

I bought some from Sportsman's Guide about a year ago. It looks cool but it did not pattern well out of my 870. I won't be buying any more. I prefer low recoil slugs anyways.

It's okay. If you want best tactical 00, try the new loads from any of the majors. Me, I use Remington's TAC8. Only 8 instead of 9 pellets, but much tighter pattern, due to design/manufacture. More lead on target, longer range. That's a "good thing."

    OldArcher, out...

Have to agree with Zebulon Batty on the low recoil slugs. Today, you can hit, effectively out to 100yds with the new low recoil rounds. Too there's always the benefit of lighter recoil, faster follow-up shots. Not something to be dismissed lightly...
